I usually hand roll a 1/4" - 3/8" hem. Some find a larger hem, like 1/2", easier to work with. No pins needed. I suggest mastering this skill before trying to use an attachment.

I can hand roll a perfect hem. I'm still getting the hang of how to evenly feed material for a 3/8" hem foot. They are different skills, but IMO trying to do the latter before mastering the former will make it more difficult to learn. It's like learning to walk before you run. Plus there are times you can't use the attachment.
Perfect, thanks for the tips. I will work on hand rolling some hems and when it's going pretty good will get to work on my hammock.
