What is a good website for trial information

I'm trying to research for a trip to Montana, Wyoming, Colorado next summer. Looking for a good site to look up trails.

Anyone use Trails.com or Alltrails.com?

Are these worth the money for subscriptions. Or am I better off just asking the knowledge here on Hammock forums.

Finding good maps and info can be a task.

No fan of paying for trail info. You can do better just using Google to research the areas you are interested in. Montana, Wyoming, Colorado are big states lots to see.

We already have something in mind in Montana. Just looking for a fairly easy 15-20 mile trail in Wyoming or Colorado. It's going to be me and my two sons. Just want something where we see some good scenery and two nights on the trail. I would love to do something in the Wind River range as long as it's not too extreme.

I use Alltrails.com and there is also everytrail.com. I think everytrail usually has some more personal information and more detailed reviews. Alltrails can be lacking in important facts. Its mostly opinions by day hikers. It is also kind of hard to search for trails in an area. It mostly just has you say the trail name but doesn't often give you information on the connecting trails.
What I have found to work best is to head to a bookstore (they still exist) or the book section in REI (or your local outdoor store) and get a trail book. I still feel that some of these books don't really explain how things are but they really help me start my search. From there, I'll get into Google Earth/Maps and find the local internet sites for the trails that I have found. Too bad there aren't as many good trail sites as those for the ACT.

There are many sources out there but gpsfiledepot is a place I have spent a lot of time. Do a search for "gpx maps ". Or other variations and you can get a lot of off the beaten path trails. Some of the ones geared towards mountain bikes and such are a good resource not to overlook even for the hiker. Creating and maintaining your own gpx file is great and can allow you to overlay waypoints on a custom map printed for a specific area that you are going to. Works great on the gps as well.
