    Keeping feet warm

I am planning my 2014 thru of the AT and have a question about cold feet. My feet tend to get really cold at night when I am trying to sleep despite the thick wool socks I bring to sleep in.
Has anyone tried sleeping in down socks from Goose Feet Gear? They appear to be very light weight at 2.2 oz. I think they could double as a pillow on warmer nights. . I use a 3/4 length 0degree under quilt and 3 season top quilt. I usually use my empty pack to insulate my legs and keep my feet in the foot box of the quilt.

My number one concern about the down socks is that it would be a PITA to have to take them off at night if I have to get up in the middle of the night. Feather Feet makes over booties for such an occasion, but I think they are a bit too expensive for what they are. (I have not seen them in person, so I am making that judgement strictly based on what I saw on the web site.)

    Thanks for you input!

Try hanging your jacket or parka over the footbox of your hammock. Works wonders.
    Carry forth.

If you do not have a full length UQ the can warm your feet from then outside of the hammock, I find the important thing is to have something under your feet where they rest against the hammock. The weight of your feet compressing the down in the socks will decrese their effectiveness. At least that's what I have noticed. I use a Thermarest sit pad under my feet inside my TQ and it helps a lot. I've also used a small sheet of CCF pad inside my TQ. Of course these do double duty as actual sit pads.

Great idea Shug! I had planned on wearing my down jacket as added insulation to my top quilt. I wonder if my rain packa would provide enough added insulation for my feet?

Thanks for the great videos! I have really enjoyed watching them and have learned a lot , not to mention the laughter they have brought me!
    Happy hanging!

I use a small piece of reflectix or ccf in the footbox of my underquilt in the winter. My feet are cold in the summer in wool socks.

Flame Throwers = warm feet. The down booties are a great, light weight way to stay warm.

Foot pad under feet, loose dry socks and that should help a lot. I also dry my feet as good as I can before putting on my dry sleep socks, and I do this as I'm getting in hammock to go to sleep. If you change socks when you get to camp a lot of time your feet will sweat and get your socks damp and that will keep them chilled also.
