    The Jerven Bag - Multi-use weather shield, sock, tarp, etc.

    I recently came across the Jerven Bag, but a quick search on HF reveals that this gear has been introduced before, albeit briefly and a few years ago. I thought it would be good to bring it back for discussion (the joys of a forum).

    "Jerven" means "wolverine" in Norwegian, and like its namesake, appears to have a tenacious reputation. In some respects it has many characteristics as a military poncho liner, but most Jeven models include a mylar-style reflective side, zippered exterior, tie-outs, and varying insulation.

    The zippered border on the Jerven allows it to be used in a myriad of ways:

    * Top Quilt
    * Top or bottom Weather Shield
    * Hammock Sock
    * Tarp
    * Bivvy
    * Mid tent

    There are some trade-offs, of course. The waterproof fabric means it is prone to condensation, but anyone using a winter sock knows that condensation is something you just live with.

    I love the camouflage fabric. Some of the images make a compelling story for use in a stealth hang.

    Prices are high for this versatile bag, roughly US$200. This could be a good DIY project, if you can source some aluminized fabric on the cheap.

    In an amazing coincidence I happened to stumble upon the very video seen in the third picture just minutes before your post. This is the first time I had ever heard of the Jerven Bag. I had been thinking a lot about making a tyvek bivy bag and/or cuben/gore-tex hammock sock but wasn't thrilled about another piece of highly specialized gear. I like multi-use items and this fits the bill.

    I wonder how many folks here have used one and what their opinion is?

    The original seems somewhat small at 143x143 cm (4.7ftx4.7ft) and a bit on the heavy side (650g) if you are packing it rather than wearing it.

    It looks like the bag she was using in the video was the King which comes in at a whopping 4.1lbs but is huge at 143x220 cm.

    I haven't yet had time to research the materials use to construct one. Have you dejoha?

    This caught my interest some time back, but the price and weight always stopped me. Wonder if anyone owns one here?

    I'm interested in a DIY version. Silnylon maybe and a reflective layer?

    Saw Suzanna's video quite a while back on BCUSA. Its not really for backpacking but in a pulk in winter, kayak camping,biking etc,,no problem. I like the versatility.

    Looks like the Norwegian site offers the the outer shell only at 100cm x 150m for roughly 25USD (not including shipping).

    Also available are other supplies:

    English site says all orders 160 SEK (~24USD) freight charge.

    For those DIYing one try Pellons Insulfleece. It is a perforated mylar layer with fleece on both sides. I use a piece for a 10 to 15 degree boost on those rare occasions that we get some cold down here in Florida.
    Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.
