0°F is just an approximation based on the amount of down and baffle size of the quilt. I was in a rush to get this quilt done for the trip so I didnt really document the process of how I made it. I have to make a 2nd one for my wife soon, so I will probably go over all the steps in a video tutorial later down the road when time becomes available.
My approach to making this under quilt was much more conservative when looking at the complexity of the design compared to others. Perhaps the next quilt will be alittle more complex in design. After watching someone sleep comfortably in a hammock with simple built in baffles, stuffed with grocery bags, I have learned not to over engineer things. Either way, this thing is very warm. First night got down to 25°F and I was very very warm. Had to vent the TQ alot. Wind was about 10 mph steady and gusts up to about 25 mph. I'm a cold sleeper so I was wearing longjohns with pants and T-shirt with fleece pullover for sleepwear.
This is a full length Underquilt with 18oz of 850 fill goose down from WL. Got the fabric from them as well. Already had some noseeum netting from other projects so used that as well. I messed up mid way through the project by mismarking the baffle lines so when I connected the two sides together, I had an extra baffle wall at the end and no more material. So cut baffle walls out instead of seam ripping it and made new baffle walls. I didnt want to seam rip and create holes for the down to escape. No worries. It is still just as functional. That is what I get for being in a rush. Mistakes happen.
The weight is 958g (33.8oz) with suspension and stuff sack. And that is after a few nights of sleeping in it.
The approximate cost for me to make this was close to $195. Not sure what quilts of equal size and down-fill go for on the market but I am pretty happy.
Anyway, here is a pic of it in action on the Three Ridges Hike that me and Dayglow finished this last weekend. You can see my DIY: Top Quilt, Hex Tarp, Hammock, UCR suspension, Tree straps, and snake skins in the pic also. So far my entire shelter system is 100% DIY. Backpack is coming soon. lol
