5 days on the Murray River - Australia

Hi all. Just a quick report on my recent trip on a section of the Murray River in Australia. This is the first multi-day kayaking trip I've taken my hammock on. I've got to say that for sleeping comfort and convenience the hammock beats a tent hands down!

Three of the four nights away were spent in the hammock, but one night I had to join my mate in his Hilleburg 4 season tent as a gale force wind and driving rain took the fun out of hammock hanging. I could have rigged my tarp as a storm shelter but his tent was there and available.

But on the other 3 nights I had a great comfortable sleep uncomparable to what I normally experience when camping in the bush.

The only thing I am planning to change is that my DIY underquilt proved to be too bulky and heavy for convenience, although it was plenty warm. So I've ordered a Te-wa anti-freeze UQ which will be ready for the next section on the Murray in about March next year. This time it will be a longer trip, and I'll need to pack more gear, so the space and weight saving will be handy.

Sounds like you had a good first hammock camping trip. Usually gets better as you learn from experience. Any picture available? Love to see some.

Lol. It seems on all of the top ten lists of the deadliest whatevers, Australia has seven of them.

Nah, nothing to worry about. We didn't see one snake all trip, and the disease carrying mozzies were nowhere to be found. Too far south for crocs and dingoes don't venture into that area either.

The Aussie bush is not as dangerous as some of us like to carry on about. Having said that, now that it's warming up a bit more, there are alot of snakes about, but common sense is the best protection no matter where you are.

I get nervous thinking of some of the critters some of you guys have to watch out for - grizzly bears and cougars and what not
