    Stupid idea

I have been thinking about space blankets lately. What do you think of putting hot coals on top of one and then laying them under the hammock to keep you warm in the night?

    Possible downfalls-

    1) could start a flame and BBQ you in the night

    2) could step on them when exiting your hammock

    4) could smoke you out

Just an idea, what do you think?

I think you're better off putting hot rocks in boiling water, especially if you have an enclosure of some kind - coals are likely to start a fire, and will consume available oxygen.

Make it a steam tent as long as you don't steam too much, because condensation will freeze.

Would melt the space blanket, possibly releasing highly toxic fumes which likely would severly impair one's ability to continue respirating.

I don't know, the coals probably wouldn't last very long. There is also the danger to your gear not to mention your feet. I once tried a Coleman propane heater under my hammock a couple of years ago before I had proper insulation and it really did not do much. I think you'd be better off using the space blanket as a vapour barrier liner and using a nalgene bottle in a sock as a hot water bottle in the hammock with you.

    Stupid idea

Space blanket would be a big no, but it does sound like a fire trench.
Simple technique to keep warm, line a trench with rocks, burn a fire, bury it deep enough to sleep on warm ground without being burned.
Works mostly with conduction, air convection would keep it from heating the hammock.

    +1 on hot water bottles.
Hot rock in a reflectix pouch is a safe heater too

Thanks for the response, I think I am going to try something with the hot rocks. I knew it was a bad idea but I wanted to generate some good ideas out of it. I currently just use boiled water in a bottle. But I thought there has to be a cool way to do something like a hot tent but for hammocks.

I've heard of a survival technique similar to this (though I've never tried it).

Dig a long, narrow trench (maybe 2' x 6') and make a fire in the entire trench. When it dies down to coals, cover the coals with the excavated dirt, and sleep on top of it to keep warm all night.

Easy to adapt to hanging over (um, set up your hammock *after* the fires covered ). Might help some if it's not too windy.
