    Big Guy and Amsteel

I making a DIY double layer for my father for this Christmas. My question is should I go with 1/8" Amsteel for the whoopies or is 7/64" ok? He's about 6', 260ish Lbs. I'm sure this has been discussed before, just couldn't find anything.

Also, any vendors here sell 1/8" Amsteel and webbing for tree straps? I'd like to save a little on shipping vs buying from two different places.

    Thanks for your input!

I'm the same build and I use 7/64'' amsteel. It works fine for me. I've been in my hammock several times since making my whoopies. I have never felt unsafe.

I'm unsure on vendors that offer both amsteel and tree straps. I too would be curious about this as I'm about to buy my second hammock.

It has come up a number of times. At 260 he is still on the light weight side of the scale for what 7/64 is good for. Once over 400 then 1/8th may be a better choice.

The 7/64 Amsteel sounds fine to me for his size. I don't know of any cottage vendors selling 1/8, but maybe that's because I haven't looked.

I am also a big guy, alittle bigger than him but i say better safer than sorry and it really isnt that much more for the upgrade, the owner of whoopieslings.com is a guy named Stu and he will sell you the tree straps and make a pair of 1/8 whoopies for you for a very reasonable price if you ask him nice and his shipping is cheap, you just have to contact him thru his website, he did it for me awhile back, cant hurt to get a price, i forget what he charged me, but i know it was reasonable or i would not have done it! good luck!

I just like the margins better with 1/8 in over 250 so that is what I used to make mine. OTOH I like straps a lot better than whoopee's. That might give you a better option. ;-)
    YMMV

    6'4" and 290 here, I use 7/64" without a problem.

I'm pushing the 300 lb mark and made my own 7/64 whoopie slings and they seem to be holding great.

300 lbs here, sleep in a hammock every day.
Using 7/64ths Amsteel Whoopies for my day hike hammock and use it fairly often.

When I get the chance (buy more amsteel) I will probably make some 1/8th whoopies.
