    Layering Underquilts for Cold Weather

Need some advice / discussion on the following:

I am going camping Thanksgiving weekend (NOVA Hang) and it is going to get COLD. Somewhere in the 40's during the day and will dip down to the 20's at night. I have two underquilts, a full length Mount Washington 3 (20 degree) and a 3/4 (or is it 1/2 length?) Greylock 4 Polar (sub 0 degree UQ). I have never used the Greylock 4 and am concerned about cold feet/ cold legs. I was thinking I could layer the underquilts with the Greylock 4 as the outside layer.

I am a cold sleeper so when a sleeping bag advertises 20 degrees, that means maybe 30 or 35 degree for me.

Any problem with what I am considering?

I layered the last few hangs in the 20's just to test this method. Hanging in a WBRR with a full length DIY JCP UQ as my first layered UQ with a JRB Greylock 3 on the outside making sure not to compress it as it is my primary source of of insulation. The DIY JCP is probably more like a 35-40° and the Greylock is a 20° UQ. The JCP full length covered the need for more insulation on my foot end as the JRB is a 3/4 length. Problem solved and and was toasty warm from head to toe. Actually was using a the Walmart down sleeping bag that is rated to 32° and had to vent it a bit during the night. So, heck yeah buddy, go for it!

Since we are on the topic of layering bottom insulation and some of the answers may indeed help the OP as well I have another questions to ask. I also have a Hennessy radiant double bubble pad that would also fit between the layers of the WBRR. With the two UQs mentioned above and using them as double insulation, would adding the double bubble pad as well get me down in the single digits without condensation issues. I feel sure that I could make it in the single digits with this system but I am worried about condensation once I add the bubble pad between me and the UQs. I am sure that this has been discussed in depth on other threads but it never hurts to revive a topic.

I've been known to stack quilts.

Here a WL full 20 degree with a Winter Yeti

In side the hammock I have a WL 20 Degree TQ and over it is a WL Summer.

    Toasty!

Being a fan and user of vapor barriers, which a pad is essentially. The trick to avoiding condensation is to use much less insulation than you think is necessary. And add as needed rather then starting with toomuch and removing.

I like to have two 3/4 UQs with them doubled up at the butt. Lightest on is on the legs.
