    Testing Begins

Starting to get ready for the MN FBH.
We are forecasted to get to 5 deg tonight and -1 on Saturday night. Got the hammock set up on the stand in the backyard. Superfly with pole mod in place. Starting with my JCP and an Enlightened 20 underquilt, just to give me an idea what the baseline is for those in combination. I am putting a GT Double as a UQP. I will try my UGQ 20 Flight jacket and run that inside a Kelty Cosmic bag.
We'll see what it's like in the morning!

While organizing my camp room yesterday I got the urge for some cold weather hanging and with the first good snow of the year falling and +10F on the outside temp gauge I could not resist.

Good luck tonight hope you report back how it went.

Last night a success no tweaking was required.

COLD WEATHER FUN!!!! I might get out tomorrow night for a low limit test on some 20* gear. Forecast is for 10*F so will be a good shake down for a slightly over stuffed set of 20* TQ/UQ.....
    Happy Hangin'

First night is complete! Temp on the ridgeline was 6 deg, so it was a good night. Top insulation with the two 20 deg quilt/bag was great. Bottom side with the 20deg and JCP, both torso length. I could feel the cold start to creep in around 4-5:00am.
I had on a light wt long underwear top and bottom, fleece wader pants and a waffle fleece top. Liner and one pair heavy wool socks. Did not have a pad under my feet, but took my down coat and zipped it up over the foot end. Feet stayed warm all night.
So the JCP UQ added about 10 deg to a 20 deg UQ.
Forecast to get below zero tonight. Now off to figure out what I can use to make a pod.

Good picts love the backyard setup. 4am is always my coldest time as well plus I always have to get up an pee about that time.

I made a pod from an old cigar shaped sleeping bag once.
It was pretty wide and for a tall person.

Made an opening in the foot so i could slide the whoopie thru and used shockcord
attached on the other end like an UQ.

Last night was great! It was 3 deg last night when I went out at 10pm.
But it didn't get much colder than that.
I added another 20 deg down bag as an UQ, and that did the trick. I wore the same clothes as I did Friday night. But I had to loose a layer on my head to cool down.
Overall a great first test, found the lower limit to my 20 UQ + JCP UQ. And worked out a set up that will be good to test well below zero.
Feel a lot better about signing up for the FBH now. I have some more testing to do, but I did not want to go into a hang like that hoping that my gear would make it.

Congrats, it's always nice when a plan comes together.
I'm doing the same thing (not for the Frozen Butt Hang) and on to step two.
How to pack and carry my hammock and 4 quilts.
It's going to take a large backpack or sled for my rig.
Hope you'll keep posting your progress.
