To remind people what the MSS ratings meant .....

They assume 4 hours, survival situation, and assume that the user is wearing the ECWS undergarments and possibly the ECWS outer garments as well to get the maximum rating in 4 hours...the same for their previous ratings for the older sleeping systems since the M1949s.

Correct, I found the individual ratings to be very generous. For the weight and size they are I found them to be more frustration than they were worth, even at the surplus price (I did buy new, roughly $100). I have one, and it got me out into the woods originally. I'd put the entire system in the car and that's about it. Carrying it was hard, packing it was a nightmare, and I was still cold above the ratings numbers.

The sleep system is way over rated, I will agree. However, like what was said before on armygear.net I picked up 2 patrol bags made them into underquilts and top quilts. weight is about 1 lbs 8 oz each. and work very well in the summer time. The patrol bag also works well to sleep in cold weather cause you can extra layers under it cause its so big. I have slept into the low damp 20 in two patrol bags. Father inlaw slept into Minus 22 deg. last winter in the black bag only for topquilt. hes a hot! sleeper. there is my 2 cents. for the money they are well worth it. But not a dream setup.
