Most of what you are discovering is why I go to the woods. One gets a whole different perspective on life when setting up camp, building a fire and making dinner in the woods compared to doing it in the average civilized home setting.
FWIW - I don't get building a wood fire for heat and and one in the stove to cook with. I'd be cooking on the heating fire. YMMV. I don't need an answer. Just another point to think about when you are re thinking your approach.
