    First Overnight Hang: Lessons Learned

Here I am, a few hours into my first overnight hang. My tarp is up, my recently-completed DIY double-layer hammock is hung, and I am bundled up inside it, thinking about what I've learned so far...

    1. I'm happy that I decided to do my first overnight hang in the backyard.
    2. I'm happy I live in Florida.
    3. Despite what some people say, Florida does, in fact, get cold from time to time.
    4. The foam yoga mat I am using as a sleeping pad is not thick enough for the temperature tonight.
    5. I am really glad I am not trying this someplace like, say, Montana…
    6. Every pillow I own is too thick for use in the hammock.
    7. In spite of the items listed above, now that the drunk neighbors on four-wheelers have gone to bed, this is still rather pleasant.
    8. I like my tarp.
    9. I'm really glad I went with a double-layer hammock as opposed to a single-layer.
    10. Siri either does not know how to spell hammock, or she does not like my accent.
    11. Regardless of how tonight comes out, I will definitely be doing this again soon.

Doing a pre thanksgiving backyard hang myself.
Glad to hear your in the back yard . Takes a little of trial and error to really figure out what gear works and and doesn't work at certain temps.
It 29 and windy here in nj. As a noob, still trying to figure out the the right gear for the weather. Better safe than than sorry! Know your gear and it's limits before stomping off into the wilds.

I did a number of practice hangs in my backyard and got my setup dialed in where I thougt I needed it. Took it out on an AT section hike in September and had to make some minor adjustments to my tarp (had it setup too high). Keep working on your setup and you will get it. Better at home than at a campsite. Good luck!!!!!!

Backyard is the way to go for testing. Last fall, winter and spring I did it at least once or twice a month to build confidence.
