    TQ/UQ care

Not sure if this is the best place to post this but how people wash they're quilts. I don't think I need to just was curious as to how and how often. I would think washing would be bad for the down. I guess Id like to know some maintenance to keep the quilts at there best.

Good question for both synthetic and down quilts.
As far as storage here is the reply I got from Paul at Arrowhead (KAQs):

"Best for any quilt is laid flat. Second best is a large oversized bag that does not compress the loft. Mesh or loose cotton laundry style bags work well. Hanging can let the insulation settle, compressing it self.

With our personal quilts, once I am certain that they are 100% dry, they get either put inside a very large tote or laid out on top of it. The lid on the tote stays cracked just for good measure, but if I wanted to seal it I would add some large desiccate packs. If possible I would not store it for weeks at a time in the stuff sack...few days here and there for hikes is not a big deal but leaving it compressed none stop is not great for the insulation."

    Re: TQ/UQ care

I usually wash my quilts a couple times a year, unless they are just sitting in a tote. I like to use Nikwax products for all of my camping gear, especially the down stuff.
Here are my steps taken for cleaning:
    - Remove the suspension .
    - Wash on gentle. Use Nikwax instead of heavy detergents.
    - Dry on no heat with shoes or tennis balls and un-scented anti static sheets. (Not necessary for synthetics.)
    - Install suspension and replace old shock cord.
    - Hang in basement for a couple days.
    - Place back in tote until next trip.
Hope that helps a little bit.

This is great timing. I'm going to be getting my first quilts this year. (waiting to see what hammockgear is offering). I definitely want to make sure that I'm taking the right care with it.

I've never had to wash my quilts.

No eating with the quilts in the hammock.
I always sleep in clean Cabelas silk long johns and use a UQP
After every trip my quilts are layed on a bed in a spare bed room for storage.
If they feel damp I will toss them in the dryer with a tennis ball on the lowest heat for 15 minutes.

Awesome thanks. I've probably had twenty plus nights in my top quilt never wanted to wash it I was worried about damaging the down. Ill get some nikwax sometime.

    Tennis ball? Why for?

I've just procured m'self a UQ and TQ, and this thread makes me think. I anticipate sweating at least a little bit as the spring turns to warm - would love to replace my sleeping bag entirely with my new TQ - it's a 25 degree Sniveler. Am I going to inevitably face the dilemma of what to do with a stank quilt?

To beat all the farts you let loose while in your hammock
And it charges your down with static causing them to super fluff.
