    UGQ ZEPPELIN - 0* vs 20*

My Christmas gift this year is gonna be an under quilt (full length) and I'm looking to take advantage of the UGQ sale.

My understanding is that the temp ratings (at least for sleeping bags) is a survival rating. Not a comfort rating. I want a hammock set up that will be comfy down to 15* (I have no plans on backpacking below 15). I'm ok supplementing insulation in the form of clothes. But, I don't wanna have to carry a pad in addition to the UQ.

I would consider my self an average sleeper (not cold nor hot). Would the 20* ZEPPELIN be comfortable if the temps dropped to 15? Or, should I go with the 0?

If I'm reading the specs right it's only about 6 oz diff in 0 & 20. That's worth the weight if it's the difference in being comfy and chilled.

I have a DIY JCP quilt for warmer temps.

    Thanks!

I did some testing last weekend. I had a 20 deg torso UQ and my DIY JCP both on my hammock. The low was 6 deg and a little wind, about 4 am I could feel the cold starting to creep in. So I know it would be really comfortable to 15 deg.
The 0 deg would definitely by warm enough, but it might be too warm if your trip does not get under 30 deg. A 20deg with an UQ protector I would be confident with to 15 deg.

Yeah I would say it all depends on where you live or where you are going to be hanging. Also you could look into the quilt protector that 2QZQ has. According to Shug it adds anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees more protection plus helps with the heat loss from wind on your underquilt. I'm seriously considering picking it up myself just for the wind blocking.

Get the 20 with some overstuff. Maybe try to get the temp rating down to 10 or so, A little added insurance and peace of mind.

The uqp does not add any warmth instead it helps the quilt hold the heat it already has.

I have a 20° Zeppelin with 2 oz overstuff and I'm a cold sleeper. I would say it is a 15° bag due to the overstuff. Especially if you don't mind supplementing your kit I'd go with the 20°. The beauty of the 20° is that you can talk yourself into needing a 40° for the summer then you could stack them up if you really need to in the winter. I use my 20° year round, it is occasionally too warm in the summer, but it's easy enough to vent etc.

Long story short I vote for a 20° with overstuff.
    Good luck,

If you have a down jacket with a hood, sleep in that when it's colder. You'll already have it with you in those temps and you don't have to worry about a separate hood for sleeping. That should supplement a 20* setup nicely.

Called and spoke to Paul. He tries to make his quilts more in line with a comfort rating than a survival rating. Based upon what Paul explained to me and what others have chimed in with I'm gonna pull the trigger on a 20 with 1 oz extra fill.

I think this will work well for my use and I can supplement with a base layer, down sweater, beanie, socks/down boots, etc. I could even bring my JCP DIY to layer or the dreaded foam pad.

    Thanks for the input!
