Greetings from a lot of places

    Good morning everyone,

My name is Matt and while I grew up in Kansas I've recently lived in a lot of different places. I went to college in Washington state so I lived there for four years and have spent summers in Idaho, Wyoming, and Alaska. I have been interested in hammock camping for a while due to the weight savings, versatility of the hammock, and a lot of other reasons that I imagine are common for hammock campers. What is finally getting me to give it a shot is my next adventure which will be in South America. I'm going to be working as a fly fishing guide in Chile for the season and afterwards I'm spending a couple months backpacking through Bolivia, Peru, and maybe a couple other countries. After some research I think a good hammock will be the best way for me to go as I'm not going to be camping every night and when I do camp it may be in the jungle. Right now I'm just researching which hammock to buy so I'll be asking questions about that as well as reading as much as I can.

    Thanks,
    Matt

Welcome. Idaho and Wyoming are two of my favorite places.

As important as the hammock is the suspension. Without good suspension you can be limited with adjustability. Long tree straps and whoopies give me the best in lightweight and adjustable. Same goes for tarp suspension.

Be creative and you will hang in some interesting spots.

Alaska, Idaho & Wyoming are 3 of the 5 states that I have NOT been to yet (Wisconsin & N.Dakota the others). Sounds like a life adventure awaits. Good for you!!! Welcome.....from the "Wilds of western Mass!"

Thanks everyone. I'm looking forward to the whole hammock camping thing. I think its really gonna open up a lot of new options for lightweight backpacking trips and sleeping options when camping. Steveks its great to see another fly rodder! Not to mention one from Kansas! I grew up in Wichita. Whereabout are you from?

Olathe just a few hours north of Wichita. I have a few friends that fly fish that live in Wichita.

I know that area well! I like that part of the state more than any other. Not too much fly fishing around this area but there can be some great fishing for warm-water species.

Bluegill, crappie, white bass and carp are the warm water species that I target the most with a fly rod. But I love fishing Colorado Frying Pan River for trout.

You gotta make it out to Idaho/Wyoming/Montana one of these days. I use to fish Colorado because it was closer but since I moved out to Washington/Idaho/Wyoming I've just completely forgotten about Colorado. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in ID, MT, and WY is just unbeatable for trout fishing if you ask me. There's just so much water to explore it could take multiple lifetimes.
