So. Tell Me About The Singer 401

While looking for a table for my 15-91 I came across a 1962 Singer 401 with a table and a boatload of attachments for $110. Assuming I get it serviced is it up to all the DIY tasks most of us can dream up?

Yep, and then some probably! The 401 is a good solid machine; and that's a pretty good price if it has all the attachments and needle plates.

What's the deal with the double needle function?

You can run two stitch lines at the same time. You use a double needle, two spools and run each thread through a tensioner (dual tensioners on the 401).

BUT... you still only have one bobbin thread so it is pretty much only decorative. Not the same as two stitch lines. But with two different color top threads it can be a very unique look.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

The bobbin thread kind of zig zags between the two top lines. so.. yeah you visually get two top stitch lines. But they are not the same a two separate topstitch lines.

Can the Singer 503A do 2 stitch lines too? I see it has to two spool holders.

The 401A has been my workhorse for well over a decade now!

I've sewn for as many as 30 hours a week on it when I was sewing professionally and it has taken everything I have ever thrown at it and come back asking for more...

The only drawback for me personally, is that my straight shaft buttonholer attachment won't fit on it's slant shaft. It has a 'built in buttonholer' which I find sadly lacking. I keep a 15-91 in the cupboard (sad, I know) just for making buttonholes.
