I think a person could make it pretty obvious (or not) by their choice of avatar.

I would like to know if I am responding to a guy or gal as I use the word feller quite often and could adjust my Whooooo Buddy to a Whooooo Betty if needed. And of course the Yessir or Yesma'am issue.
Just gender…nothing else needed. None of the other stuff required for me. Just gender.
We don't all go to the same restroom.

One could often be used for that.

As previously stated, one could indicate gender in a signature or under one's user name.

As a female with a gender neutral forum name, I've been referred to as he/him on a few occasions. It doesn't bother me, I just correct it if it's pertinent to the conversation and ignore it if it isn't.

It's not really a big deal but yes, I'd fill in my gender if it was on the profile the same as I'd fill in my age if it was there. If someone doesn't want to fill it it, it's just absent on the screen, same as what equipment you're using - it all only shows up if it's filled in.

I think we're in the minority here, but who knows- I had no idea the OP was female!! How many more women are 'lurking' out there with neutral names.

There has been times where I had to rephrase my paragraphs because I couldn't tell if the person I was talking about was a he or she. Personally I don't see why it would be a problem to put the option on your profile. Perhaps we should all start assuming everybody is a she, and see how long it takes for that option to show up on your profile.

Does it really matter? I was doing something at one time and when a female showed up (on radio) 5000 guys fell over each other and stomped on each others signals to talk to her. It makes no difference to me here. As long as you give good info I don't care if you are a man or woman and gender does not come into play. Sometimes it's better not to identify, especially online. Another words "gender neutral". Hey, we all have the same needs here. Info.
