    Tarp Stakes

Hey y'all. Seems like everyone uses the MSR GroundHog Stakes. Why are they better/different than just regular old tent stakes? Thanks in advance

y shaped cross section, holds better in soft ground. i just use cheap aluminum sheppards hook stakes in hard ground, x shaped plastic ones in mud and snow.

Many use shepherds hook still and regular tent stakes. Use what you got.

Others don't use stakes at all. Until they get to camp. Then they make their own from found wood.

The MSR Groundhogs are very strong and light for their price. The Y shape holds the ground nicely in softer soils. This makes them very desireable.

I use Coghlan's Y stakes from Walmart. $3/set of 4. That's .75 cents each. Not as strong as MSR's but I like the price and if it breaks, .75 cents for another.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Most times I use titanium shepards..They hold quite well in average soil... If wind is an issue I go ground hogs..
We would be one step closer to world peace, if everyone slept in a hammock..

MSR makes some very high quality gear, their stakes are some of the best out there. There are though a lot of copy cat clones of them. Some are good and some are crap. Get what you pay for sort of thing. The Y shape is very strong and. Great choice for softer soil and for rocky soils. Out here in Idaho there is very little holding the dirt together...little to no clay and lots of rocks. The ground hog is a really god choice out here. Shepherds hooks don't always hold in our soils so they don't have a spot in my pack.

I carry 2-4 ground hogs and some V shaped pegs of similar quality that are a bit lighter and nest together better for the rest of my stakes.

Does anyone use the augur (sp?) spikes. They screw in and I haven't had a problem. I think weight might be an issue though.

Anything that says MSR on it is bound to be super well-made. The stakes have a heavy anodized finish and stay strong, look good doing it, and don't pull out easy. Plus, they say MSR on them which is cool. Last batch from eBay (Paid a whopping $6 for ten stakes) came with an MSR sticker. Stickers are awesome.

Recently got some of the titanium nail-stakes from Dutch. Very cool, and light, too. Highly recommended!

I know the sticker was great, what about the eBay stakes? Do you know how much they weigh?

PS which eBay seller did you buy from?

Not sure - it's been a few years, and I think it was from a private seller who was just nice enough to send the sticker. Didn't even get a sticker when I bought my Hubba! Weight (by my scale) is .35oz each. They're MSR Needles, not the tri-Y shape, though I have some of those too - bought from REI.
