Ring Buckle system - Older HH Exped Aysm?

Hi folks, first post. I am glad to have discovered the forums, as I own a HH and Speer, and have gone from hanging to ground gripper and back several times over the past few years. This forum has gotten me fired back up to hang again, even to the point that my HH Exped Asym is at 2Q/ZQ's getting Mod #2 as we speak (thanks, Donna!).

Here's my question. In doing the forum dump on the ring buckle systems, I started looking at my HH to see if I can make it work. First thing I noticed is that it appears my line leading from the HH is much heavier than others I've seen in the pictures (not sure of what it actually is). In fact, it's so think that I have concerns that a ring buckle will even work correctly in it. My HH is at least 4 years old, I think, and of the heavyweight variety as I weigh in around 245. Has anyone played with a HH and ring buckles using this heavy weight line? I'd like to get some feedback before I start messing around and possibly cutting that line off of the hammock.

    Thanks,

I wouldn't see why it wouldn't work. The line into the rings just supports the hammock weight and attaches it to the rings. You might have to experiement with knots to get it to come out right.

Experiment a little than cut the lines when you are happy.

    Welcome aboard.

Just Jeff has a setup on his webpage that should work.

I think the second version in the directions using the prussik adapter would work best for the larger line.

    Welcome aboard

I think rings would work just fine on your hammock.

Grizz also posted instructions for Garda Hitch hanging from a Marlinspike hitch toggle that works with rings. I like this setup.

i use the ring/garda supension since last spring with my hh
and i didnt change the cord on the hammock ...
all i did was to buy 4 rings at the store and add them to the tree hugers , im 200lb and it never sliped , just secure it with a slipery half hitch and it should hold . i bought my hammock 2 years ago so i dont know if its the same suspension cord then yours but even if it was twice the sise a mine i dont see why it wouldnt work ....

Thanks, guys. As soon as my local REI gets the rings back in stock I am going to try it. I'll have the modified HH back from ZQ early next week.

Ah heck man, don't wait for REI to get them in stock. I learned a little secret recently from an REI employee when asking about the SMC rings. He said that they are almost always scooped up by employees as soon as they come in. Certainly explains why I rarely find them in the store.

Just order them online for store pick-up. They are usually there within 48 hours, cost the same, and the employees don't get to swipe them first. Problem solved.

Purple_Haze, awesome avatar pic! Are you also permanently closing that beautiful (yes, sometimes painful) bottom entry slit after the zipper mod?

    those are the ones alright.

Buy a bunch, they come in handy in all sorts of ways, and it helps to amortize the shipping cost.
