Next Step on the Hanging Trail

I would eventually like to shift over to a Top/Under Quilt Combo... Given my current set up, what should be my next few or first step

    Eno Double Nest
Eno Fly (mod'ed for a Single Ridge Line with 2 s-biners)
Big Agnes Bag W/ Inflateable Pad

Underquilt? Top Quilt? save for both at once? I'm watching the FS section like a hawk, but I want to build a plan.

    thoughts?

Good idea to have a plan.

What temp range do you want to hang in?
One set of quilts won't cover all ranges.

    Will there be bugs?

How much rain do you anticipate?

    Car camping or back packing?

I could just say Yes... but here are some details

I'll still keep my present stuff and ground gear for when needed.

I am out at least once a month either with family/friends or the scouts, sometimes 2-3 weekends in a row.

So the overall temps range from low 30's to upper 90s. anything 60-70 and up I should be fine with minimal coverage.

Bugs are an issue about 1/2 of the time, We do some car camping, but I really try and keep my stuff to small load for all the Boy Scout outing. It makes it far easier to manage... Grab normal stuff, and go.

My thought was to address the bug issue (maybe by snatching up a used WBBB) then gather a 20 deg set of quilts for the coldest temps.

I could even use an Underquilt with a Grand Trunk HC bag that was given to me recently but I have not tested personally yet.

OutandBack is of course asking the right questions that you should be asking yourself. I'm new at this and currently going through the same process with much of the same equipment. Keeping warm underneath is the biggest difference in hanging and being on the ground so seems a logical first step to me. I decided that based on the fact I'm trying to get into lightweight backpacking, a bottom quilt was most important for reducing bulk and even some weight from my existing set-up. Whether or not to do it with pads or UQs depends on your situation. A car camping or back-yard tests with your existing set-up so you have the ability to either supplement insulation or bail out, will tell you where you need to go from here. Seems like every trip, I'm refining my set-up.

    Cool.
You already have a tarp, hammock and sleeping bag so I'd up grade them last.

Looks like a bug net and Under Quilt might be the first order of business.
20 degree UQ's are probably the most popular since they cover just about all temps except hot summers and deep winter.

The forsale sections is a great place to pickup some top gear.

Yessir…a UQ first. You can use the sleeping bag in the hammock as a bag or in TQ mode.

If bug net won't be needed till spring why not go for the UQ first? I wouldn't change hammocks solely for the bug net. Lots of add on and DIY options for bugs and a few months to work that out.

Check out Underquilts.com full length 20° UQ filled with 700fp down is $170. I bought one of his unfilled shells and can vouch for his sewing skills.

I'm thinking that at 6'5" I may need to get a longer UQ.

    I've been looking at

    6' 5" Holly Cow.
You should consider making an 11' x 60" gathered end hammock.

or checkout a Wilderness Logic Snipe.

I am 5'9" and can get very comfortable in my 9' ENO double.
