    winter tarp question

I'm going to mod my Toxaway to add doors (via 2Q..) and was wondering, do the doors normally come straight down in the middle? At what angle would that be the case - 90 degrees? When looking around, I've seen velcro as an option to add to the doors. Wondering if it would not be better to just overlap them slightly.

I'm typically in porch mode anyway, so I'm mostly be setup at an angle greater than 90 degrees, but while I love having the open view, I'd still like to get wind protection on the sides - thus, wanting to know how others have typically set theirs up?

I did my doors based on a fairly wide tarp pitch. And I did add velcro as this is my snow/winter tarp. It did not add as much weight as some would think. Maybe 3 ounces but this is my heavy tarp for serious conditions. Also added a pole mod to the center to shed snow better.
These are older pix below. I rig the doors on overlap by line just staked to the snow.

    LOL, Shug's gear shop?!?

Thx, good to know about the velcro, though I'm a little hesitant to put it on cuben doors if I go that route. Cuben is more for the transulent quality rather than simply weight.

If you want some side wind protection but still want porch mode, you could always just make one extra large door on each end so that when pitched tight, the door crack would run down the tarp edge instead of down the center (as in one single door the size & shape of two normal doors put together). If you make it so the door can attach to either side, then you wouldn't have to worry about which side is the "front" when pitching it. Just an idea.

First let me say I luv my 2QZQ door.
I believe, without setting the tarp up you do get a small overlap when the tarp pitch is at 90 degrees.

If you really like using porch mode (45 degrees) you could contact Tim and see if he would be willing to make/design one door to be extra long so the door could be closed even in porch mode. When the tarp is set at 90 the long door would just wrap over like a GrizzBeak.

I guess I can do one side close to straight down, and then have the porch mode side with enough slope to make it 90 degrees. Also doing the center pole mod which will help keep it open if I bring the tarp down some.

Cool idea with the one long door...

I don't think I've ever seen that on a tarp. Almost like your own personal lean-to covered totally on 3 sides. If you do decide to lower the porch, you can just overlap the long door. Interesting...

Snowing here…a wetish heavy snow. 28ºF
Here is the tarp in the backyard today. The pole mod really helps keep the snow from collapsing the tarp.
Now…if I were in there sleeping or hanging out I would hit the tarp from time to time to help shed snow.

With a 90 pitch and the back side of the tarp staked low you still wouldn't get much of a porch mode. A 45 is perfect.
I use my door in many setups mostly to block the wind or give me a little extra covered space when it rains. I can't think of a time when I have gone into full <90 degree doors closed.

Here's a link to many of my tarps setup during hangs using doors, Grizzbeaks, rain, snow, as wind blocks etc.
You will have to scroll down abit page 2 has more door picts.

    Wow Shug great backyard shots.
That pole mod is doing its job. With out it, I'll bet the tarp walls would be up against the hammock with that snow load.
