Video: Thanksgiving 2013 Hike: Art Loeb Trail

This past weekend, Caleb, Blake, and I headed out on the Art Loeb Trail. This was my first time on a trip with this kind of snow. It was nothing like you guys up North, but I loved it.
The original intent was a thru hike, but as it seems many of my trips recently have ended early, this one was no exception. Each time a trip ends early, I learn something new. This time I learned that I'd like some neoprene socks for hiking in the snow with, too much cinnamon is a bad thing, and that hiking in snow and ice is rather time consuming and fleece melts if it gets too close to dying coals.

This was one of my favorite trips in a long time.

I look forward to running the last 11 miles or so to finish the ALT this Saturday. Be on the look out for an Antigravity Gear Pocket Profile for the Art Loeb Trail soon.

Almost had the chance to do this trail back in October, but could not work out the details to get it done. Thanks for sharing your trip.

Great video FIMB, enjoyed all the different angles and the views.
Any other lessons learned with your footwear other than adding neoprene socks?

I was hoping to read your trip report, but alas I'll have to wait. I'm happy to share.

Great! I'm glad you liked it. I was feeling much improved by around 6pm. I was thoroughly empty and well rested.

Thank you, sir. That means a lot.

    • I'll be making a pair of DIY down booties if I can find a pattern I like.
    • The Silnylon socks work very well, but should perhaps not be used as an over-bootie and rather as a VBL due to sweat build up. It wasn't that bad if I used the sil socks with my wet shoes, but on the bare snow, it made a difference.

    Not footwear, but:
    • I don't like carrying the bulk/weight of fleece garments. I had 100 polar weight pants and jacket along with a 200 weight vest to supliment my Montbell Ex light jacket.
      • I now have a Golite Bitterroot jacket and Western Mountaineering pants on order.

    • A hammock sock also may be in my future (ala Hangingout).

    FIMB,

Thanks for sharing your trip. The clear weather made for some great views. I really enjoy that area. My kids love yelling from the top of Devil's Courthouse down to the parking area and listening for a response.

You will have no problems at RHK.
VBL for the feet, very very smart.
Hot water into plastic bottle into the hammock/downy goodness? Not me. You must really trust Nalgene.
The scenery was outstanding FIMB, your physical prowess needs this type of trail.
LOVED seeing the Bonefire and its supplement....wonder how many are in the Bonefireclub now???
Ayn Rand just smiled from the grave
Cool and smart reflectix on the bear can stool.
I've found over the years that most bears dont hang out at that altitude in our eastern moutains when it gets that cold....they go downhill to where its warmer; only us crazy humans head to places like that in the cold.
    Great timelapse!!!!!!.
One thing I noticed, you have great acumen of all the trails, all of the mountains in the area...like a walking GPS.
Looking forward to the Antigravity map of that trail.
Noted, avoid the Jamaican porridge. Cinnamon is a medicinal.
Just a fantastic trip report. Dont think I'll ever be up to speed to do this one, so loved living it through your eyes.
You'll be burying your shoes on the Roan (and your water bottles)
