    Bedroom hammock rig for kids?

Some friends of mine are trying to find a better way to fit their kids in the mobile home they live in. The idea of hammocks has been brought up so they can be taken down during the day.

The room is ~11'x14' and there are 5 kids. My thought is a 10' triangle with 4x4 posts and 2x4 top and bottom braces. Two levels of hammocks on two of the sides with bottoms at 6" and 30" off the floor. Eye bolts in the 4x4s for hanging off of.

Anyone out there have any other thoughts or experience?

I personally would hang them side by side. 5 hammocks in 14 feet gives each kid 33.6".

That doesn't sound too bad, but how kid 1 get to the bathroom when the door is on the other side of kid 4?

    How old are these kids?

How well built is the Mobile Home? The kids parents would not want the hammocks to rip a hole in the walls or damage the structure. I wonder how the structure of a Mobile Home would hold up with the forces of hanging a hammock might put on the structure. Five kids doing all the stuff that kids do in large groups, I think this might be a question for an engineer. LOL

Are the kids all potty trained? Do any of them have accidents? Does anyone sleep walk?

They would need to Hang so they were not too close to each other, because kids heckle each other.

Kids need their privacy as they start to mature, I am not sure how you might handle that.

My aunt had two sets of twins and three single births, each event was between 12 and 18 months apart. She had three sets of bunk beds with a trundle bed underneath. She used curtains to separate the beds. Wow, those kids had some terrific fights until they were given their own rooms. Privacy is a big issue for maturing kids, I guess I would just stack-em.

I would make 2x4 frame along each 14' wall and run a 2x4 across for each hammock. Hammocks would not go all the way across the 11' width. I am 5'10" and am comfy in a 9' hammock so I would imagine kids would as well.

I believe the kids range from about 5-12. I'm not sure if the interior walls of mobile homes are even 2x4s, so I would think that a independent frame would be required. So, it looks like with a 9' hammock you could get away with a 8' area between anchors.

Jayson, are you proposing a frame x feet from the wall and other other on the wall, so you can have a walk way? If so do you think that 2x4 is strong enough to deal with the lateral forces if all the kids decided to get in one hammock?

Ya I think a 2x4 would be strong enough. The force is acting inwards from the ends same as the framing in a wall.

I might need a picture as I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm thinking about something with eye bolts that would have lateral instead of compression forces on it.

    Over build it.
And don't use the mobile home.

Kids will be kids. It'll be 4 kids swinging vigorously in the hammock. Regardless of what you say or do.

The hammock will be a giant play toy. And the forces will be multiplied.
    Ambulo tua ambulo.
