    Winter sock or not?

I have a WBBB XLC with the zip on over cover (replaces the bug net) and a 2QZQ UQP on the way. Do I need a winter sock? Winter temperatures average around the 32F to 5F range with moisture being a regular problem. We have been known to see -5F for a week or two at most and on the rare occasion -20F. I have been looking into a canvas sock but I am unsure if I actually need it.

    Thanks guys,

I use a hammock with a winter cover and 2QZQ UQP. I have not needed a sock.
Aren't most socks made for 10' hammocks? Maybe an extra 6" on each end doesn't matter.

You don't really need a sock. There are many people here who have slept out in some very cold weather with out one. Myself I have gone done to -3* without one a couple of times. While I have a sock for my ridgerunner I do not for my other DIY hammock, which I will use as well.

I think if your zip over cover will block the wind and vent your breath you will be OK - a strong wind and low temps might still cause you drafts.
My temps usually stay above 22F with wind - this year I started experimenting with a DIY tyvek sock that is similar to SnrMoment's fleece sock - now I won't leave home without it. You'll be the same way with your over cover and UQP.

    Thanks guys.

I should add that I have a WL Bullfrog tarp that is not a winter tarp but it does have doors. I'm thinking of this as mild temperature (relatively speaking) setup for when we have little to no snow, so the need for a backpack, and around freezing temperatures. For the really cold stuff I will use my hot tent and cot with my toboggan.

I know how important wind protection and layering is in the winter and so I think I will look into a making sock. I have been having fun sewing up gear as of late.

SnrMoment how heavy and what size rolled up is your fleece sock?

I just finished it and tonight will be its first night out. Have not weighed it and it packs down to about the size of a basketball + some fat. Was made from fairly light weight fleece. 5 yds for construction and very little waste.

It's going to need a few adjustments/mods, but will finalize those tonight. Modeled after Papa Smurf's sock, but not quite so nice.

What I find fascinating is people write of the negatives associated with a bugnet in winter but no one mentions them when a winter sock or over cover is brought up. The only difference is the type of material.

By the other threads, the bugnet will "catch" some moisture and freeze to the net, then fall back on you. And the socks made of canvas will allow the moisture to stay in a vapor state and pass thru the sock, keeping the "snow" out of your lap/face.

I think this may be due to the canvas being sort of windproof, keeping the microclimate warm enough to not freeze the moisture.

At least, that's my take on it. But, I live in Florida and haven't had the luck to see it in action.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

I camped with a couple of friends this past weekend and one of them used a DIY Tyvek tarp tent. We saw temps around -12C (5F) and he had very little condensation while I had a snowstorm in my silnylon tarp tent.

The third friend and a member here used a DIY canvas sock over his HH and under his tarp w/ doors and was toasty warm and comfortable with zero condensation problems. I on the other hand kept thrashing around on my pads and woke up sore.

I also like the idea of raising the temperature inside so that I can get away with lighter quilts.

Off to Fabric Land and Lowes this weekend.....

Now to decide on canvas, Tyvek, or fleece (or something else entirely) and a pattern...
