What to use as backing for webbing tie-outs?

I've just about completed my first gathered-end hammock. It's all sewn up and just waiting on the amsteel to arrive tomorrow.

The only other thing I want to do is add side tie-outs. I have the webbing and know where I want them, but I'm not sure what to use to back the webbing.

Actually, I'm not even positive I need to use backing. Could I get away with just sewing the webbing without back-side reinforcement? It seems like a bad idea but my inexperience might just be leading me to paranoia.

Any and all input will be greatly appreciated.

I don't really think it needs reinforcing. Place the webbing on both sides of the hammock edge hem and sew.

That's it ^ right there. It reinforces itself.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

But do you really want to tie out the upper edge? Wouldn't you want the tie out a few inches down from the edge to widen out the body of the hammock? If you just pull out the top of the sides your gonna lose all your heat plus be open to dew etc.

I was thinking they'd be more for summer camping and even then, I'm not sure how much use they'll get. I actually like being enveloped; it's really cozy for me. I just figured I'd put 'em on in case I ever want to use them. They don't really add much weight and they're not an issue when not being used.

I do see your point though. I'll be making a few hammocks in the coming months just to see what features I like and what I don't so I'll definitely give your placement a try. Plus, I like to have spare "loaner" equipment for taking friends backpacking who've never been before so this R&D phase should provide for that as well.

Next up is going to pretty much be the same as the first one, but this time I'll have at least a foggy idea of how to sew. I figure it'll be good for practice. Third hammock will be a bridge though. I'm looking forward to that challenge.

Thanks again everyone for the helpful insight.

That's the way I do it on my DIY hammocks.
