JRB quilts

Does anyone know how long the jacks are running their end-of-the-season sale? I just ordered my first hammock (a BB) and haven't even gotten it yet. I was going to try the pad thing first and see if that worked for me, thus making my wallet fat.

Now that I see their quilts on sale, it makes me want to grab one RIGHT NOW. I'm such a sale freak... even as I type this I'm watching SAC on another monitor.

I'm a bit reluctant to throw down the scratch for a quilt before even taking my hammock out for a spin (got a week long trip starting the 9th). Also, I've heard lots of great things about Brandon's Yeti, but since it's not on his site I don't exactly know how it will compare in warmth/weight/price to the jacks quilts.

At any rate, I've managed to turn a simple, one-sentence question into a whole book.

That's true, but I was also hoping someone could give me the skinny on what's going on with the new Yeti.

from what I have read Brandon will have them at Trail Days and for sale on his site after that...I think

If you did splurge on a JRB you wouldn't regret it. I have two splurges, in kelly green, without buyer's remorse.

lori, maybe you can help me out then, since you have experience with them. I have the feeling that if I opt for the cold weather quilt, I'm not going to be able to use it comfortably for my 3-season camping too, no matter how much arm or leg I hang out of it. If I get the 3 season, I'm guessing I'll have to buy another one for cold weather stuff.

Most of my camping is 3 season, but my favorite time to be out is in the dead of winter, so I do as much as I can on that end too. I'm also considering a Yeti, but there aren't published specs on it anywhere. I think I read somewhere on here that they are also a 3-season, but I'm not sure.

I'm trying to avoid having to buy two different quilts. It really doesn't fit my budget, especially after just having ordered a BB and supercat.

I now have three, I can't decide which one to get for number four. I have the topside all covered, No Sniveler and a RM No Sniveler. My Nest is an older thinner version, so it comes down to a Winter Nest or a Mt Washington.

Therein lies another problem... I think I'll be better off with one that can double as a top quilt or a bottom quilt, because I have serious doubts about using a top quilt at all. I move around so much during the night that I have the feeling I'd end up cold in anything but a bag.

You are getting a Blackbird right? If so, you don't want a JRB Nest, it has velcro to mate to the Hennessy entrance slit. All the other JRB quilts are supposed to work fine on a Blackbird as an UQ, IIRC. The upcoming 3-season Mt. Washington may be your ticket if you want a full UQ. Pads should work fine in a BB, since it is a top loader... decisions, decisions.

As for moving around too much, most people don't fish flop in a hammock because there are few pressure points. If you do decide to get a bag, there is only one that is suitable, a Feathered Friends Rock Wren (or the Winter Wren). I'd order it with a fifty inch zipper so it could be used as a quilt on warmer nights. I've found my No Sniveler is just as warm as a Rock Wren (they have the same loft) as long as I wear the JRB Hood. The quilt is a few ounces lighter. They both serve as wearable insulation.

My backup plan, should I ever go out in winter, is to pack along all my quilts - two 3 season down quilts and the Ray Way alpine upgrade, an overcover, and a weathershield. The two down quilts will hang together underneath (2.5 inch of loft apiece, tho I'm going to guess the first quilt will be compressed a bit), the ray way over the top, some expedition weight base layer plus maybe another layer, the overcover... something tells me I'd be warm.

The Hudson River (my quilt) is the same temp rating/loft as the No Sniveller, only without the head hole. I am very warm in high 40s - mid50s with the quilts and have them opened up rather than tucked into a tube around me at that point. If you have an underquilt plus topquilt, the underquilt should be the warmer of the two. The Jacks have a chart that will show you ratings. Their 3 season quilts are rated to about 25F depending (I am a cold sleeper, and I have been quite warm down to about 31F - haven't been out in colder weather than that with them yet)

You know, I'm an active sleeper, but I find in the hammock I don't move as much. Occasionally I wake up with a cold spot - I retuck the quilt and it's easy for me to go back to sleep. I'm waking up less and less as I have more nights in the hammock.
