    Rough Night

So I thought I would try the Hammock out in the cold. I live in Ohio and a few weeks ago it snowed during our camping trip with temps around 9 degrees. My gear is only rated for 40 degrees and my TQ at 20 degrees. I stuffed a poncho liner between the UQ and Hammock, put a blue pad in the middle of the hammock layers (Warbonnet DL) and covered the mesh bug netting with a fleece blanket. Well, I wasn't cold at all but still having some problems.

I have always been a stomach sleeper I haven't got a comfortable lie in the hammock yet. I put a pillow under my knees and neck. So this trip, I move so much that my pad kept getting dislodged causing cold spots causing me to unzip get out in the cold and re configure the pad then get back in the hammock. After three hours I shared a tent. The ground even on a pad kills my back which is why I bought a hammock system. I really want this to work I lay on the angle flat I think Im doing everything right I even bought good expensive gear.

Any advice would be appreciated Im going out again in a few weeks on an overnight ATV ride. Thanks

    Hmmm?

Sounds like you might sleep better on a longer hammock.

You might be better off with a bridge hammock if you are a dedicated stomach sleeper.

It might not be an option for those temps, but I would try without the pad. I can't sleep on my back in bed but have no problem in a hammock. I have no experience with pads though.

This works great for securing pads, I do this all the time.

    Bigger/wider pad.
Better underquilt, forego the pad all together.
Winter style tarp. Close the doors to block the wind.

40* ratings on your gear are for 40* nights.....
    It ain't 40*.

    The comfort issues.
Try the hammock at home indoors. Tweak the set up till your comfortable. Start with some naps? Feet up higher than head?
Then try it outdoors. If that fails you, try a bridge hammock?
Some folks just cant do a hammock??

Side and stomach sleepers can get comfortable after a trial/error period. I was a stomach sleeper. Now I sleep anywhere. Even in a chair next to the fire.

First thing I would say is you don't have the right gear for 9 degrees. Second thing is that sleeping in a hammock, for me, is nothing like sleeping in a bed. I'm a side sleeper in a bed, but that just doesn't cut it in a hammock for me. I sleep on my back in the hammock.

Backyard experimentation is essential to figuring out how to stay warm, and it sounds like you haven't done that. Practice, practice, practice!

    Your 6 foot 4, 230# sidesleeper and someone suggested a 10' BB?
Man I'd take that guy off my Christmas list.

Although the rest of your gear is high quality it is not rated for winter.

My suggestions would to sell the BB in the forsale section and look for an 11" long 60-64" wide hammock.
Dump the pads, because you already know why and look for some bargains on used quilts rated for the temps you want to camp in. Guys on this forum are always upgrading and selling top quality stuff in the forsale section. You've got to be fast many are doing this so good stuff sells in minutes.

Hope that helps and don't give up there is a learning curve and you just got your first lesson it should get easier from here.

+1 on what he said. I found a deal on a 0 deg on the forsale Subforum. But they do move fast.
