NJ AT rules are pretty strict as well. To be expected since pretty much everything is illegal here in my home state.

-Camping is restricted to thru-hikers who are hiking for two or more consecutive days.
-Camping is limited to one night per campsite.
-Camping is limited to ten persons per campsite.
-Hikers must camp within 100 feet of the trail.
-Self-contained stoves are permitted; ground fires, charcoal stoves and grills are prohibited.

    Hikers MAY NOT CAMP:
-Within 100 feet of any stream or water source
-Within 1/2-mile of an established roadway
-Within 200 feet of another camping party
-From 1/2-mile south of Blue Mountain Lake Road to a point 1 mile north of Crater Lake

As far as NY state parks go, there is a fairly comprehensive rule list here: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7817.html

Hammocks are not specifically ruled out, however...

" No person shall remove or injure any plants, trees, flowers, or rocks found on state land."

So I'm sure, if a ranger decides for him/herself that your hammock might be injurious, it's "ground or gone".
Wouldn't putting a tent on the ground kill a few blades of grass "plant"?

Greylock area would be nice (because it's close to me!)...I would do my best to attend that one. Vermont is pretty good as well....and is actually part of New England as well, which I would assume is a requirement for a New England hang! Heck, otherwise let's just call it the "Antarctica Hang" and hold it in New Jersey or something!

mt greylock is part of the at with parking area on top,at campground, also a few dirt lots. so there are options hike or just walk from car.there is 3 shelters and the lodge on top with a restaraunt. lets get some more input on this location.

Actually the lodge at the top is closed for rennovations, and the road is under construction...my understanding is that the road should be open in a week or two.
But we don't need no stinking lodge...we got hammocks!!!

Mt. Graylock would work for me. Fairly central location, should encourage people from a wide are to come.

There was a place in the Berkshires that was really nice that had some nice streams running thru it. I can't remember the name of it. I would be interested in joining up and hanging with you all if its not more than a 4 hour drive from where I'm at in Pa.

I was out this weekend on the Loggers Path trail in Pa. I highly recomend this hike a easy to moderate 28 mile hike we did a 10 mile ,11 mile ,and out today 7 miles. Lots of places to hang with good water. You can find info on this trail doing a search of the Pa. Trails.
