I think the Western Mountaineering Highlite, Mitylite, and Caribou are all sewn-thru. 35F is as low as they go with sewn-thru models, so that probably tells you what the lower limits of that method's usefulness is. I've stayed okay in my Mitylite in the upper 30s, with nothing but a thin T-shirt and shorts (no socks). I wasn't exactly toasty and I could feel the cold spots a bit, so I had to put on some socks and that helped. In the summer months when the lows are over 55F, it seems like letting a little heat out would be a good thing.
Just wondering where most of you purchase Down for your UQ.
I bought mine from featherind.com . The website seemed a little iffy but their product was great. 700 fill grey goose down if I remember right. Way cheaper than the other sites. I did the math too and the weight savings from 700 fill to 900 fill is on the oder of an oz or two and a hunderd dollars or so.
PM me if you want me to email you the pricesheet. It is a couple years old though. You can email them for the latest.
The down was pretty high quaility. I stuffed my quilts by hand and could not feel any quills/feathers. No leakage to report after a ton of uses.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?
The hanger formly known as "hammock engineer".
Speer down for me.
Somewhere, tucked away in my mailbox, is their current price list (within 6 months). If you need me to track it down I will, just let me know.
Trust nobody!
colder that what? how much colder than _____?
a sewn through TQ i use for late spring/summer works to about 45°, comfortably. 1.1 ripstop shells, 800+ down with 1.5" loft (max)
there is a chart on typical expectations for baffle height right here: loft chart
Also, the WM highlite is sewn through only on the horizontal baffles, the vertical baffles have a 1.5" mesh section. fwiw, the temp ratings are conservative. I know more than one person that uses the Highlite down to mid twenties regularly-without additional layering of any sort.
Thanks for the down sites and didn't mean to take over thread.
sorry coffee didn't mean to leave you out. i'm still arguing with myself on a sewn through or baffles. i ordered some insultex and i might incorporate the two. i was thinking of making a sewn through quilt with the insultex with about 6 oz of down. then sewing a top and bottom layer around the perimeter of the sewn through. and finally doing a perimeter sewn dwr 1.1 ripstop shell. what do you all think. good, bad, too heavy. help a virgin diy'er out.
