Hear is the result of doing alot of reading here, and re-learning to sew. I just wanted to say thanks for all the ideas and directions here.
My two 10yr olds are ready to go hiking/camping when I get their nets done.

very nice,,, great job
About how much $$ and time did it take to make just one hammock w/bug netting? Reason I'm asking is to use as an example to my scouts on how cheaply they could make one if they're interested.
Horses in the background, nice place to hang!!! Did they even notice you??
Its hard to say on the time, I made and remade alot until I liked it. It could be done alot easier/quicker now. Im sure thats the way it is with everything when you start.
I will say I made a couple for the kids to start that cost less than 6$ without the net. Thats from the $1.50 walmart clearance aisle and stuff I had on hand so it may vary. If you can find the fabric there its much cheaper though. Thats the digital camo fabric you see in the pictures here. Since then I have added ring buckles and velcro on one side for the net to come.
For scouts to try it you wouldnt even have to sew the edges. You could just whip the ends. I used ratchet straps I had the first time but since have found poly strapping at Wally world for sale in the boating dept.
The horses were pretty but they were our neighbors and we see them all the time... did get woke up a couple times from horse sounds as we were trying our hammocks out though.
10' Ripstop from Walmart: $5.00
10' Netting from Walmart: $5.00
10' Paracord for ridgeline: $1.00 (military supply store)
Spool of Polyester Thread: $1.00
(2) 12' 5mm Accessory Cord: $9.60 (local backpacking store)
Really great hammock that you built yourself for under $25.00... priceless.

Gathered end hammock w/channel rather than whipped ends... less than 1 hour to make. If you sewed up the bugnet when you did the hemming the time would be roughly the same.
Yes that IS realistic.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Hate to be a downer, but I don't see webbing on that shopping list. We should be encouraging our young people to be respectful to the trees- that involves treehuggers, IMHO.

thanks for pointing out the need for tree straps on the list. I will be able to supply my whole troop with them because I've got this "roll" of mule tape that I made mine from and I can easyly make them for my scouts.
