    Old Man Winter modifications

Got my Old Man Winter rain fly (Christmas gift from wife,-- who may use it as much as I do, since it has doors and gives privacy all year).

I really like it, ... but I've already started modifying it. I can't help myself!

I removed the straps-clips-and-grommet assemblies and substituted a simple loop of Kelty Trip-tease reflective cord. Lighter. Simpler. Nothing to break. And no grommet to slip off the pole (which happened to me the first night as my back bumped against the underneath side).

The cord also makes it easy to hold the doors back/open, too. Just slip it off the pole, through the door grosgrain loop, and back onto the pole. Pics below. Although I'm already thinking of a simpler way using my shepherd's hooks tent stakes. The poles really give a lot of extra room underneath the rain fly.

I'm thinking of modifying my own modification, which shock cord in lieu of the Trip-tease.

Outstanding! I recently bought one of the pole kits to use with my DIY winter tarp. Your solution with the cords will work much better than the straps and grommets.

    Thanks for sharing!

PS -- Congrats on your early Christmas present.

LOL re the bamboo poles. I posted a couple of years ago now about cutting bamboo on my grandparents old farm in SC, now owned by my brother, and hauling it back with my little Ford Ranger pickup truck on I-40, looking like the Beverly Hillbillies. If I can find the pic, I'll post it here.

I just recently got around to cutting and sanding some of it to make a couple of hammock stands. Otherwise, I use it for tomatoes in the summer.

    Glad you like 'em!

P.S. Found the pics from Dec. '11. The first shows some of my family deciding how far to drive behind me in my truck, so as not to be associated with me! The second is on I-40 at the "Welcome to Tennessee" sign (near the AT, actually), where we stopped to take a photo of Grass (middle daughter, who thru-hiked the AT) and her fiance. The last photo is the bounty in my back yard, waiting to be prepared for curing.

No can do! Wife intends to steal my OMW on our non-winter hikes and kayak camping paddles, so she can have some privacy! So, the MacCat is still my main rain fly.

So far I'm very impressed. Taking it on a mid-January hike first off.
