The answer depends on the part of the country you live in. In the west the difference between day and night temps can be pretty big. But here in Missouri during the summer there is frequently no need for a bag at all since temps only get down to 70 or so.

However you always want a tarp. The dew can fall pretty heavy in the summer months and that isn't pleasant.

    Right on!

    Good Question, and good answers.
I always keep my tarp up in the snake skins.
    Ready for quick deployment!

Don't forget all those cute little birds up in the tree that like to leave you presents.

Coconuts have dropped close enough to me that I was REALLY glad that I had a tarp up.

I keep the tarp in the stuff sack if I know it's not going to rain (late summer droughts seem pretty regular in VA). Some nights I get a little dewy, some nights it's not that bad. The dew point can be determined in advance, if it's a big deal to you. In warm summer temps I use a silk liner instead of a bag and it dries easily, so getting a little wet isn't a big deal. For me it's worth it to stare into the treetops.

Funny you should say that Shrek. The day of that picture a bird did leave a present on the end of my hammock. I was just glad that it wasn't on me! This time.....
