I personally started with a larger tarp. I wanted one that could do it all. The WL OMW is that tarp.
I can batten down in the worst of weather or raise it up and porch it out when the weather is good.

As I gained experience and knowledge, and my wife became interested in hammocking, I wanted a 2nd tarp.
I opted for a WL Tadpole . The workmanship is impeccable and I'm really happy with both tarps.

The Old Man Winter is still my favorite tarp and only use my smaller tarp (Tadpole) in the hottest months.

This was my personal tarp journey and I hope it was a little bit helpful.

.....but if you're up for the challenge and want to save the money, I say do it yourself. Building your own tarp can be a very rewarding experience! Check out the D.I.Y. forum here, there is an amazing amount of information and resources available. Everyone there is awesome and very supportive.
