I started my hike along the AT the last weekend of July last year at the MD/PA line and summited Springer Mt. On Nov. 1 hanging most of the way. What started out as a 3 day 31 mile weekend trip took a drastic change when I was dared to go the rest of the way on the first night. I started out with a $40 target 40° sleeping bag and a big blue utility tarp coupled with my ENO double nest. Once I realized I was going the rest of the way, I had a 30° down mummy, a Thermarest air mattress, and a hex tarp mailed out to me. The only uncomfortable night's sleep were contributed to crappy hotel beds. The coldest stretch of weather I experienced were three straight nights in the mid 20's where I stayed nice and toasty cocooned in my bag. Things might be a little different starting in the north that early. I plan on starting the last week of March this year at the same MD/PA heading to Katahdin, and am looking at UQ options myself. I did enjoy the option of going to the ground since I had a sleeping pad, and was convenient on those long days.

Like EZ, I too am leaving from Springer on the first week of April. I will have a Bear Mountain Bridge Hammock with a Never Winter 30 bag, a NeoAir in the sleeve and some reflectix under my bag. I have been down to 5F in this set up, but I am also a warm sleeper.

Anyone completed a thru with a BMBH?

This AT thru-hiker (Loner) used a hammock system for his trip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sTft2mLI0k

Wilderness Logics now offers "doors" for the Tadpole tarp.

I am leaving on the third of April, but will be starting off slow, so I am sure you will catch me at some point before we get to Carolina. See you on the trail.

Even if you choose your own trail names, it can get changed. I hear that Thru Hikers are notorious for coming up with trail names.
