New Doublenest - first impressions

Well, I have definitely become a sick person now (like most gear junkies who hang out here

. I just picked up hammock number 5, an ENO Doublenest to use with my wife on a backpacking trip last weekend. I am really impressed with the room, comfort and quality of this hammock. Inserted below is a picture of my wife in this hammock on our trip to the Fossil Creek Wilderness in Arizona last weekend. Pitched above it for ample shade is the JRB 10x11 tarp. We did not attempt to sleep together in it - that would have been too difficult. But we spent many hours lounging around in it, reading, drinking, eating and napping and were the envy of the entire group. It made a very comfortable chair for us both to lean back into. I think more than one person got converted to hanging that weekend, including my wife. It looks like I'm going to have to go out and buy hammock number 6 now .

It looks like I'll be purchasing my fourth Blackbird from Brandon now.

Not exactly ultralight, but with the retrofitted camp nano biners the hammock weighed 20.65oz. I could only find the original slap straps at REI, which weighed 11.05oz. BTW, the slap straps worked really well I thought. Not as much adjustability, but very easy to work with. I am considering an upgrade to the lighter and longer version (pro or micro).

Question: does anybody know why I should not just go for the lightest Micro Slap Straps version? It seems to have the same weight rating, and at 4.5oz a much lighter option. TIA.

I've never tried the slap straps- but I think there have been some complaints about stretch. Personally, I don't find stretch to be much of an issue when hanging with sag and attached high to the trees, as opposed to with a structural ridge line. Stretch problems have been mentioned by several with the the Claytors. It might stretch, but it has not actually been a problem for us.

If you are going to get Slap Straps, I would go with the micro as it has twice the loops for attachment. My biggest problem with the regular Slap Straps is lack of ability to adjust when the spacing on the loops is not right for the hang. With the micro, you will have more hook-in options.

FYI, here is the response I got back from ENO on my slap strap question:

The Micro Strap is lighter but it tends to stretch under heavier loads (possible readjustments). You also lose some durability in the long run as well. Our best selling strap is hands down the Pro. The Micro was intended to be paired with our ProNest for the customer who’s watching ounces and doesn’t mind the drawbacks of a lighter system. Also, I need your mailing address for the catalog.

Thanks for that Shrek. They don't make that fact obvious on the web site, other than commenting on the increased length. Are you suggesting that the micro straps have more loops than even the pro straps, or ..?

According to the 2009 catalog, it will have twice the loops of the pro.

maybe i looked at it wrong but isn't it the slapstap multipros that have twice the loops

It was great to check out your setup and drool a little. I might have to go get me one of those eno's for car camping and short b-packs with my hubby type. It just looks like such a great way to spend time! I like this shot best:

My own hammock still needs some dialing in, methinks, but it sure would have advantages! Maybe I could even learn how to sit still for more than 10 minutes...

Hey Wendy, thanks for taking that picture. That was our favorite time on the whole trip, kicking back, sipping wine, with the blues drifting down from the speaker above. Now that's what hanging is all about!
