    All In One Hammock Sock

What "all in one", i.e. wind, water, condensation hammock sock are hangers currently using? What are the pros/cons, cost, weight, durability, pack size, product availability or diy plans of the sock you actually use? What temps, wind, humidity, precipitation and region have you used it in. How did it perform?

There are plenty of individual HF threads on all the great socks people have come up with. How about a discourse reviewing them together with some test data? There is no single sock that fits all needs. However, with some comparable data points, we might be able help point each other in the direction of the sock that fits.

    GoreTex Sock Test 1a

Just to get the ball rolling:
    2:00am
Been out in the hammock since midnight testing a GoreTex hammock sock from underquilts.com.
    Weather.com 21 degrees (feels like 14), 76% humidity, 5 mph west wind.
Thermometer inside sock, hanging from ridge line, reads ~26 degrees.

Suspension ends of sock are cinched shut. Wearing a face mask that is still dry.

Heavy frost layer, thick enough to write your name in, has formed inside the sock.

76% humidity, and that was outside the sock.

Yup, according to weather.com 76% humidity. If anyone has any cheap tool suggestions for measuring actual humidity both in an out of the sock let me know so I can get a more accurate read.

3:16am, for the early morning amusement of other sleepless HF'ers and any critters around my camp curious about the ruckus I made, I managed to shimmy and slide around the hammock enough to open the suspension ends of the sock without exiting the hammock. That would have been almost as funny as then watching me wriggle back into my sleeping bag keeping my feet inside the reflectix roll and my butt and shoulders square on the 3/4 air pad.

Still zero precip but now 78% humidity,
19 degrees (feels like 13), 5 mph ssw wind.
Temp inside sock reads ~28 degrees.

Sock interior surface remains a Shamrock Shake Frosty. We'll see if opening the ends has any impact. So far the GoreTex appears to be having trouble letting water vapor pass. I am sure MollyMack could explain why. Going to be a soggy joy if the temp shoots up in the morning and all this frost rains down on me.

I originally setup the hammock last night during our CT zero degree cold snap. No frosty condensation last night for the couple of hours I tried it out. However, I did notice a light sparkle on the inside and outside of the sock when I initially got in the hammock tonight.

I think you'll find that, in an enclosed space, goretex has a limited amount of effectiveness. When Goretex came out, I believe the standard for moisture breathability was 1/20th of untreated fabric. It's gotten a little better over the years I believe, but when air's not moving, that tends to happen. Anyway, I'm also interested in what kinds of solutions people like for all-weather gear. I happen to be designing a shelter right now that I hope will be comfy year-round and am always looking for more info, particularly where the prevention of condensation is concerned.

P.S. You said the frost was thick enough to write your name in. By the attached picture, I've learned that your real name is "HI"

Grats Aerobyrd93 for the link to that meter.

6:40am. 18 degrees (feels like 9), SW 6 mph wind, 92% humidity, temp inside sock ~25 degrees, zero precip with warning of intermitant sleet showers. Ha, I only need to flick the inside of the sock to make my own sleet/snow fall in this hammock microclimate. Open end vents are not helping at this point. Maybe if they were open to begin with but even then I think these weather conditions and sock fabric are frost prone regardless.

If frost will form on bug net, I see no reasonable expectation of a sock, any sock, being free of condensation issues.

High humidity and cold air. It's gonna condensate on whatever is between the two different temps, even if it can fully breath. I think that is what Dave was getting at.

10:29am, 31 degrees, frosty thermometer inside sock reads ~30degrees, zero precip, 69% humidity, winds calm.

End of Hammock watch duty notes:

Struck camp before temps rose to melt frost. Was able to brush off and easily shake out all frozen condensation leaving a dry sock, sleeping bag and test subject.

Single walled Nalgene metal bottle that was hanging inside the sock, outside the sleeping bag, as a test nearly froze solid.

Slept fairly well. Coldest around 9am, interesting since that was when temps were rising.

Reflectix roll around feet and lower legs was a lifesaver.
3/4 Thermorest pad was fine when it stayed under my shoulders.

Sock appears to have done its job, cutting the wind and convection while slightly increasing the temp compared to outside the sock. Poor performer on frost build up but as was said, hard to avoid given the weather.

Still need to test this sock in a hard rain for the all in one option.
