    Hitting the Smokies

I'm hitting the Smokies on the 17th. I normally go with a HH with JRB quilts and a the JRB 11x10 tarp. I know you have to stay in the shelters, I'm bringing a pad but hoping to be able to hang in the shelter. I'm staying in Icewater, Tri-Corner, and Davenport. Anyone know about the "hang ability" of these shelters? I know that if there are others in the shelter (right now there are no reservations other than my group). Just wanting to get some info and advice.

Hopefully someone better than me will come along and answer this for you because I have been trying to research this myself.

I know it is definitely "against the rules" to hang in a shelter according to GSMNP policies but then, a lot of people do it anyway and no one says anything to them. Just from what I have read it seems like it depends on the rangers or ridge runners who are monitoring that day and how they handle it.

Keep checking on closures in the Smokies due to weather and bears.

I can't answer your question, but be sure and bring your blowtorch and plenty of extra clothes to burn so you can stay warm.

I've posted pics of myself hanging in each of these shelters back in May. Each shelter has a covered porch area perfect for hanging from the rafters. Except davenport and it's caged in, so I connected one end to the fence and the other end to a log cross beam. Since the shelters were booked full, they were all very happy that I freed up extra space for them. It was a win/win for everybody. . My profile pic is me hanging at tricorner. I hauled a tarp for 30 miles, never took it out of the bag.

Did you run into any rangers or ridge runners? I've read that it is against their policy but that it depends on who it is as to whether they say anything. Just wondering because I would like to do the same this summer.

hanging in a shelter is a no-no just like putting up a tent in the shelter

So, are hikers not permitted to sleep anywhere but in the shelters? My wife and I are considering a section hike thru GSMNP this June. Just want to know if we should even bring the hammocks.

I'm an old guy so maybe this is a generational thing but I first check with the primary source's website for information.

    Backcountry Regulations:

    8. Hammocks may only be used within designated backcountry campsites. They may not be used inside shelters and may not be attached to shelters in any way.
