Tyvek ain't what it used to be :(

I was going to start a new project and went to get a roll of Tyvek and noticed it looked different. There seems to be two kinds at the hardware store, one is a woven white material seemingly exactly like the blue poly tarps, only I don't think it is as well sealed. The other, however, bears resemblance to the good old spun stuff, but it has a distinct grid pattern, if a bit random. I grabbed a corner and it ripped off with little effort. It seems to be very strong when pulled 45 degree, but it tears very easily when pulled parallel to any of the weave. There appears to be some spun fiber sandwiched between really thin layers of this gridlike material, but it does little to help strength, it instead fluffs when you tear it.

Well, that is a bummer. I guess I can bag any grand Tyvek plans.

There are actually 4 types that I know of. The big box stores just order what they will make money on.
Here is one of the distributors that will sell in 'smaller quantities'.

They do sell a ground sheet that is the good smooth surface stuff in an 8x10 sheet.

Don't give up yet. There are lots of different Tyvek types/qualities, but limited colors.
Just let us know what you want to use it for so someone can share their results.
I've seen Tyvek tarps and I currently use a Soft Tyvek sock.

I picked up a large sedan sized tyvek soft shell car cover for $4 at value village, I have been slowly going through that, thinking of using it as a sock, but not sure if there is enough left.

I am going to be playing with tarps again soon, so I burn through yards quick and I like taking regular ugly Tyvek out for ring stuff out. Besides that I use it for non hammock stuff too.

I didn't realize they actually marketed items for camping purposes. I think I will have to go that route and quit advertising for Lowes

This is interesting. Might be a good addition to an emergency kit to keep in the car.

I'm in the habit of watching for a house being constructed with Tyvek on it and go ask the contractor for the scraps. But the last couple years more & more of them are using the Lowe's House Wrap and other cheap brands that don't hold a candle to real Tyvek.
