I usually keep mine on the ground cloth under my hammock for easy access to any items I have inside, but hanging under the hammock sounds good.
In areas with problem critters, I hang my pack high on my hammock suspension.

I have a small gear hammock (it also doubles as a bushcraft chair) that I hang underneath my hammock to store my gear for the night
I usually just put mine on a small piece of 3 mil plastic where I take my kicks off.
Keep Calm
Hike On
In the hammock with me as a foot box pad.

Be aware that in many locations you will want to hang your pack.
Porcupines in the northeast will chew the fabric of your pack to get the salt out.
Raccoon, skunks, deer and many other critter will chew, lick and or crap in your pack if it is within reach, especially if you are hanging near an established camping area or shelter.
A great many people think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices.

Depending on my pack configuration for the trip (my pack's a little screwy compared to most), it usually gets hung from the suspension. The main pack usually gets hung from the foot-end suspension via sternum strap; there, it helps to stop any windblown rain from hitting the foot end of the hammock (my blackbishop bag and/or my Camelbak holder/daypack [told you it was an odd design] does the same thing at the head end and my poncho/undercover covers the remainder of the hammock). This helps me to get by with a smaller tarp than otherwise.
Hope it helps!

Hang from head end of hammock suspension. Keeps it off the ground and under tarp.
just lay it under my tarp/hammock usually. Haven't had any problems yet.
