    Lightbulb .... Plan Of Attack

I know this isn't probably the right section but I like to hear as many opinions as possible and at least 20-30 more people read this section at any given time as the correct one...so here goes..

How do(did) you guys/gals plan your insulation systems?
Im getting my setup together and am curious how you planned yours.
Im thinking a 40 degree top and bottom quilt will get me through the spring summer fall and a 20 degree setup layered into my 3 season plus a pod maybe will get me into as deep into winter as I would like...
I live in the northeast so I know this will vary based on geography as well.

Trying to keep spending to a minimum kinda ..as in not buying 4 top quilts and 4 bottom quilts ect....

Maybe just one top/bottom quilt for winter and one top/bottom quilt for summer.

Are there any Ideas ...lines of thinking ....Plans of attack I don't know about?

You can go with a 20* TQ/UQ to start then as you can add either a 50* or 40* TQ for summer use with a 40*UQ. You can then "STACK" the UQs for colder winter weather. With a 40/20 STACK you should be good to 0*F or colder on bottom. Nest the TQ's, buying a slightly larger 20*TQ than the 40* or 50* so the lighter TQ will fit inside the 20* nicely allowing for loft. 50/20*TQ good to 0*, 40/20*TQ good to 0* or colder....

Just posted this review of a super light weight 4 season stealthy set-up. If you need to go light, compact, breathable, and get into low temps, check out my recent project...

I started with a summer 3/4 UQ CCF pad for legs and sleeping bag I had.
It was all I could afford at the time.
I wasted a lot of money on hammocks in my first year eno,hh,bb only to find I needed an 11' hammy to be comfortable.

I watched the forsale section and picked up deals as they came along.
Once I had a full length 20F UQ and TQ I stacked my summer quilts to extend my season.

awesome advice so far as usual guys...
How far into spring will a 40' setup take me with out it being to hot?
And once it is to hot what do you guys do?
I guess its a lot of trial and error ...
I was thinking once it gets around 65ish Id bring my army woobie and would be ok?
Maybe with a 40' under quilt?

    thanks again

Yeah I'm debating on the 3/4 thing...
not sure what to do really though...
If I could swing the full length monetarily I probably would but not sure If Id need it in summer?
Is it better to stack a full length UNDER a 3/4 or visa versa ?

Stack the 3/4 under the full, closer to the ground with full length against the hammock. Stacking a full over a 3/4 can cause larger gaps between quilt and hammock where the full extends past the 3/4.

60-70* with a vented setup is upper limit after that no real need for insulation for most peeps besides a light TQ/Fleece Throw...

The advice given to me by Stormcrow has been very sound: he recommended a 20* TQ and 3/4 UQ for versatility through 4 seasons. I've used that combo from 75 degrees down to 13 degrees. I've never vented the UQ at all - if I get hot I just kick off the TQ.

I bought a full-length 0* Incubator last year and have gone as low as 3 degrees. I plan on adding a 0* TQ in the near future. I don't anticipate ever buying a summer TQ/UQ 'cause I hate summer hanging. If it's hotter than 75 degrees at night, I'm not going to be out there.

If you're in the Adirondacks, I wouldn't think you would ever need a summer TQ/UQ.

As for stacking, I have the full-length UQ next to me, the 3/4 underneath it. That's the way I see Shug doing it - and others.

I didn't do much cold weather hanging when I first started hanging. I used pads and a sleeping bag. Decided that I liked this hammocking thing and decided I needed a down underquilt. I chose down because it is lighter and packs up smaller than synthetics and I don't paddle. My first UQ purchased was a used Jacks R Better Nest, which keeps me comfortable to about 34*. This is a good 3 season bottom quilt and it fits my Hennessey Hammock bottom entry as well as my DIY gathered end hammocks. Next was a 20* Burrow top quilt from Hammock Gear purchased during their 2012 Black Friday sale. I decided a lightweight summer quilt set would be nice, so next was a used 40* Wilderness Logics top quilt. Then I ordered a 40* Wilderness Logics Summer Series UQ. I like these because they give me some warmth, but don't take up much space. Time passed and I decided I wanted to be able to go lower than 33. It took some time to decide between a 20* and 0* UQ, but I finally decided on a 20*. I figured if I need to go lower, I could stack the JRB and HG UQs. I won a discount coupon at a group hang and HG had a sale too, so I purchased a 20* HG Incubator made with argon fabric. My husband indulges me, so the quilt journey will most likely continue.
Keep movin', keep believing and enjoy the journey!
