I wish I could join you on this trip. I have fallen in love with the state of UT, and have not been to the Flaming Gorge since the 60's.

You UT people are very lucky to live in such a beautiful state. Has anyone ever been to Echo Park, where the Yampa meets the Green River. It has to be a Top 5 on my list. I would love to visit it by land some day and stay there for a few days or a week, and do some fishing and hammocking.

Then there is Lake Powell. What more can you say?
We are now ready to start our way down the Great Unknown. We are three quarters of a mile in the depth of the earth. We have an unknown distance yet to run, an unknow river yet to explore. What falls there are, we know not; what rocks beset the channel, we know not; what walls rise over the river, we know not. Ah, well! We may conjecture many things. The men talk as cheerfully as ever; jests are bandied about freely this morning; but to me the cheer is somber and the jests are ghastly. Powell 1869

Aleut 12' kayak what a lovely sight looking up from the gorge to the Red Canyon 1400 feet down. I don't remember if one can kayak below the dam on the Green river. Fire hole Wyoming is nice to paddle more desert look. Plan to head out behind site 14 hiking this area or the Red Canyon Rim trail. Maps at the Red Canyon visitors center.
If needed sites are still available closer to May/June we'll have a better idea on how many but 20 that's a great start.

I've done a Gates of Lodore trip once, and we stopped at Echo park for water and to hike up to Whispering Cave. Awesome place. Tiger Wall & Steamboat Rock are impressive.

People take canoes down Section A below the dam, but I've not seen touring kayaks. Fast water and small rapids. Class I-II with some consequences if you mess up in Mother In Law rapid. I'd love to do a paddle in the main Flaming Gorge Res. I hear it gets windy in the afternoon, so maybe a morning excursion. I'm doing some reading on the best paddle spots. Red Canyon Lodge is right down the road from our campground and it has a small lake to paddle on (no motors).

    Super excited to meet everyone.

I think we should all come prepared to teach the others something. Lessons learned..... Skills.... I think it would be beneficial for those who are newer to hanging such as my family.
Keep it simple. The more crap you have and the more complicated it is, the more likely it is to break. Get back to basics man!

Hi I'm John and brand new here.
I would like to attend, but cannot commit yet. Vacation not due till July 1, so I need to work that out with da boss.
I will be on two wheels and plan to pick up some fish to cook from local market on the way in.
May need to barter for some grill time from someone.
Still working on hammock system. I will be the noob making all the mistakes.
I'll also try to pack the folding kayak on the bike.
How far is nearest grocery from campground??

    Welcome Ozarque,

You're coming to a great hang to get your induction into hanging.

There are some grocery stores in vernal about an 40-50 minutes or so to the south, Walmart is on the far west end of town but there are a few others. To the North is Green River and Rock Springs WY both about 1.5 hours away. There are some small convince type stores in Dutch John about 20 minutes away from the campground but I would not count on finding XYZ if you're looking for anything to out of the basics.

Hope to see you there in a couple months.
