Starting in TX, BMW and Hammock to go

I am Travis located in DFW. Been camping since I was little but always in a tent. I used a couple of string type hammocks along the way and always woke up sore. I am taking a motorcycle trip come the summer and figured a hammock was the way to go. It lead me to this site and now I am the owner of a WBBB 1.7 DL second hand My wife an I are tackling a DIY hammock for her since she hates sleeping on the ground. Stay tuned... by the summer I may have a thread about my trip from Dallas to Seattle and back, via motorcycle.

Howdy and welcome to the trees!

Sounds like a great road trip you have planned. Be sure to take larger tree diameter into your planning. The standard WBBB suspension is great for here in TX and most other places too but may come up short in older growth forests in the northwest.

I will watch the local group. I am in the military, volunteer at church with a Boy Scout Crew and also hoping to do some TBOT archery this year. Plus I will be a brand new uncle so I will try and figure out when to catch a hang out. Thanks

Roberts13t welcome. I have 15 bikes which 9 are BMWs. I travel with a HH Explorer Delux Zip. I built a stand to use at campgrounds where there are no trees available or a no hammock on tree rule. It packs down to 42" now but I know how to get it down to 21". Just haven't had time to do it. Been using the hammock for about a year now and will not go back to a te#t. Check out my pictures of the stand. Happy hanging.

How much will that stand support? That could be handy for sure! I would be concerned about how stable it is, but if you trust it, I would like to know more about it.

I tested the stand to 325 lbs. Me @280 and a 45 lb dog. We shook and swung and it stayed very stable.

The tie outs are aircraft cable. 10" lag bolts with washers are screwed into the ground. 6" lag bolts with large washers are in ground with tubing Sat over them so they cannot slip or bury up in the ground. Cables are made up with single clamp at upper loop and double clamped at bottoms.

Poles are closet rods so they telescope. Quick pins hold them together. Cordage made to the correct spacing makes set-up distance repeatable every time.

I will be revamping the rods to make them pack down from 42" to 21" as soon as weather permits. To heavy for hiking but works good on my motorcycle trips.

I also want to try amsteel for the tie outs. Just got 200 ft in last week. When I re-do everything I will take detailed pictures and make good instructions & post them.

    Robert from TN.
