    D.I.Y. sil treating DWR

has anyone tried this. I have treated uncoated 1.9 ripstop it was my first D.I.Y. project. but I now need a bigger tarp for my bridge hammock. I an thinking the DWR will keep the sil treatment from bonding. I had great success with the 1.9 it is 2 years old and still going strong

You probably need to test it out but I think if you can get good penetration with the silicone there's a chance it will work. Maybe washing it a few times first will degrade the DWR coating enough to help as well. It'd cut a small square or two, roll hem the edges then test out washed vs unwashed.

No experience coating DWR, but I too would be concerned it might not stick. My DIY sil-coat tarp (made from uncoated) is also holding up great.

mine is just under 2 years old and doing great only reason im thinking of doing another is I'm now upgrading to a bridge , and I want doors . I have a bunch of dwr around the house so I was just going to use that but I may just buy some more un-coated and just treat it again

seems if you wash the DWR material with a specific soap or wash, you will get the original DWR off.......thus freeing up the material for the application of silicone?

I guess the challenge of 'coating your own' is part of the fun, but if you are buying fabric, why not just buy silnylon? I've used so-called 'seconds' (from DIYGearSupply) a couple of times and it seems fine - and is not very expensive, usually.

thats a good question.... I think originally, he has a bunch of DWR material that is not being used and wants to use that for his tarp....thus his question of whether or not it would be worth trying to treat with silicone?

I have the dwr on hand, also untreated and or dwr is still cheaper than the sil, plus its just cool to say I treated it myself and it has held up. furthermore you only have a limited selection of colors in sil
