    Talk to Me About Cordage.

I see many types out there but don't really know what how why or when.

    Some are for tarps ,
    some for ridge lines...
    some wont hold knots
    some are for splicing.

And different diameters of all above.

Does anyone have a handle on this and can lay it out simply for me ?

7/64 Amsteel for whoopie suspension and continuous loops for gathered end hammocks.
Lash-it or Zing-it for ridge line to set (fix) your hang for consistency and for your tarp line between trees.
All these take well to splicing and retain their strength rating spliced with 72xdiameter bury and are a little too slippery for knots.

You can use lash-it or Zing-it for tarp or mason line or bank line for your tarp tie outs.

That's what I use, and like. Others will throw different ideas out.

    Thank you Thumbs...
So Lash it and Zing it will both work for knots on tarp tie outs?
And the amsteel is just thicker diameter dyneema .
Im thinking of getting Tarp tree lines with flyz attached already if it cant be tied..

Amsteel and Lash-it/Zing-it won't hold knots well and it reduces their strength, so splicing is best on these. It's pretty easy and there are plenty of youtube videos already on how to splice and make loops.
Depending on your tarp, you may also want an elastic component with Zing-it backing it when it's stretched tight for handling wind and tarp stretch.

    Thanks again Thumbs...
So it's better to actually "permanently" put the lines on the tarp with splice loops?
I'm glad I asked because I hadn't ran across that at all.

The whoopie sling attaches to the tree strap on one end and the amsteel loop on the hammock via a dutch hook, or ring.

    Start here.

There are some fabulous videos by shug on youtube that will give you the overview while entertaining you at the same time.

Do some reading here about how to set up and hang, all suspension related threads are here.

Not really, splice a loop then larkshead it to the tie out.

Lash it and zing it (same thing, different colours) do ok with a prussic and some knots will hold ok, it may derate your line a lot but your tarp tie out will probably still break first, zing it is overkill for tie outs, imo anyway but they do work very well and are lightweight.

I use 1.8 mm spyderline for tarp lines. high strenggh. holds knots well. unties easily. doesnt tangles. works extremely well in cold wet conditions. it was designed for sailing which is why it has those qualities. It cannot be spliced which would only be necessary to make woopis slings and such. no need to splice for tarp lines, any loss in strength is still not going to make the line weaker than the tarp.
