    Design your dream quilt

If you were to design your perfect top quilt, what features would you include and why?

I'm thinking of things along the lines of turning the quilt into a wearable item like the Sierra Sniveller, or a piece of absorbent material to catch breath. I'm not very experienced in the quilt world and am pretty new to the whole situation, so there may be some other considerations that I haven't run across yet. Maybe there is a feature you really loved that appeared on an older quilt model that has now disappeared - or maybe just the opposite.

Any and all idea appreciated, looking to pick the brains of the long-time professionals!

I remember reading that thread, lots of nice touches. The ability to open the footbox in warmer weather would certainly be appreciated by those of us with sweaty feet!

Yeah, I thought about using just a plain pure finish ripstop nylon on one side so I could flip the quilt over in summer and let some of the warmth breath out of it, but in the end I decided to save that idea for another quilt and keep this one lite.

Built my ideal quilt also here..

I put a heat arrestor in it so when I shift around it keeps the heat from escaping.

I'm making what I call an Underwoobie, inspired by this post:

    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...ad.php?t=83610

When that post was made, I had already started on a combination TQ/UQ/Ground quilt/Serape and offered these pics:

    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...ad.php?t=83610

I've since upped the design ante by making it functional as a ground shelter/tent. Its based on combining the concepts behind the military Poncho Liner and Shelter Half, with the added functionality of use with a hammock as an Underquilt.

    Preview Pics of Underwoobie #1:

60" x 84" before sewing, Epsilon Multi-Cam outer shell, 1.1 Marpat inner shell, 5.0 Climashield APEX:

Snaps allow for square foot box top quilt:

UQ suspension in end and side channels:

Can be stored inside the channels when using as a TQ:

Using the UQ end suspension allows for a gathered end footbox:

Side channels act as a storm flap when snapped as a TQ:

    One possibility for serape configuration:

Allows one to handle long slender tools or other objects one cannot talk about on HF:

Packed in an 8" diameter compression bag:

Underwoobies can be snapped to each other to create two man bags, or in the same manner as military shelter halves. There will be a grommet at the centerline of each side and stake loops at each corner. They can be folded in half in both directions and snapped. I'll be making one without any insulation or inner shell to use as a rain cape/tarp shelter/UQP, and will add to that an Underwoobie made of fleece (a Fuzzy Woobie) that will snap to it as a warm weather TQ/UQ/Sleeping Bag.

Weight right now is at 2.4#. I'll be using Argon as the inner shell of #2, which should reduce that a bit, but this is not for gram weenies. #3 will be done using 2.5 Climashield. With those three quilts plus the Fuzzy Woobie and Rain Cape, I should be able to configure my set up to deal with any kind of weather the Gulf Coast can throw at me, whether I'm hanging or going to ground.

I need to clean up the bedroom so I can take pics of it being used as an underquilt. I've slept in it for the past two weeks with no heat on in the house. It got down in the 30's last week and I didn't notice it. One night I slept outside in my HHDJ and had to bail, but I think that's because it was the first time I used it and hadn't quite gotten the suspension where I wanted it and set up in the dark. Problem is, we don't get too many 30 degree nights down here, so I can't replicate the conditions to confirm.

A heated UQ that is solar powered and I could adjust the temp that I want it to omit.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

mine would have an attached reverse hood with a long slit at the neckline to put your head through so I wouldn't have to sleep with a hat on
