    "Canopy" Hang

It seems like everyone has been setting new cold records this winter. I am not yet equipped to handle freezing weather so I was pretty excited when temperatures rose to just above 40 yesterday. I went to a nearby forest preserve and I finally accomplished my goal of setting up a hammock high in a tree. I have long thought this would be fun but had pretty much given up on the idea until I saw this thread by “Refreshing”:

I just used a basic DIY ripstop with Dutch’s all-in-one whoopie hook suspension. Since I was still tied in to the tree I didn’t think I needed to use any kind of super sturdy special hammock. My climbing gear was basically copied from the RADS used by Refreshing. I didn’t stay overnight because that would be against FP rules, besides I work the night shift. Definitely my coolest hang to date. I would estimate I was 25 or 30 feet high. Once I started to get cold I used a sleeping bag and a DIY JCP Puffer underquilt.

I think you set the record for the adage "hang your hammock no higher than you are willing to fall"

Well certainly not the record but I'm learning. Until the thread by Refreshing I did not know that tree climbing and canopy camping were even things that people could do.

The highest I am willing to hang my hammock in a tree is 20 feet. Any higher, I would look down, and see how high I was, and scramble down! I'm just happy that I not the only crazy one here...

    YES!!!!!

AWESOME hang man! I am sooooo happy that I could help. I hope this isn't your last adventure into the tree tops! I am curious, what type of ascension system did you end up using?

    "Canopy" Hang

One time when I was getting in to a hammock about 7 feet up, the branch revealed, quite suddenly, that it was eaten by termites. Luckily, I was wearing safety gear! (Word of the wise-always make sure your branches that you hang on aren't eaten/ dead)

A while ago there was a thread on here about a guy doing this in Central Park, NYC.

I used a RADS to climb similar to the setup you showed in your new video. I got a used Grigri (1) on eBay for cheap (I know a questionable safety move). The main difference is I used a klemheist knot instead of an ascender and just tenex for my safety line and foot loop. Before the winter I just tried to climb trees with prussics and a sit stand. The problem was I couldn't do a limb walk (more like a limb butt scoot for me) with the pussics. So I could get up the tree but not setup my hammock. Yesterday was my first try with the grigri/RADS and I managed to get set up.

Definitely won't be my last time, thanks again.

Well that is great. No worries on the used gear either. I bought most of my climbing gear used, even bought a used rope once. Just be diligent (sp?) about checking your gear and you should never have any issues.
