You should look into ULA or Gossamer Gear packs. I own a ULA CDT and it's comfortable to me, but you have to pack it just right so that nothing pokes you in the back because it lacks a frame. I use my partial foot pad as a back panel and it's only 19oz the way I have it set up.

I have a Trangia and it leaks fuel for me. I like the alcohol stoves, but I'm not a fan of the Trangia. Maybe I just got a bad one; I also find it heavier than a Mini Bull Design or similar stove. I use the MSR Pocket Rocket now and love it.

That Snow Peak is nice equipment too. The Trek 700 is on my wish list.

I've looked at the Gossamer Gear supplies online. I'm not sure if I want to go completely frameless...hence the reason why I need to get over to REI or whatever to test out packs for real...like shoes, I may purchase my pack online (to save money or whatnot) but only after I've determined, in person, what it is I actually want : ) Thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry to hear about your Trangia. I've only owned two in more than forty years, and that's only because my first one got stolen from me. I've never had an issue with leakage (knock on wood--knock, knock). Never even had to replace the o-ring...maybe I'm the lucky one!

Wow reading this has brought up once again the fact that the military has me tied down too tightly. I would love to be able to head out and hit the AT. This is on my bucket list but will have to be something I accomplish in about eight years. Good luck out there and enjoy every minute of it.

Thanks, Jeep! Don't give up...it has taken me 40 years to finally get to a point where I can fulfill my dream (i.e., inner obsession) of thru-hiking the AT...hopefully you'll only have to wait for eight : )
