    hammock/tarp storage

I could ask brandon this directly, but we all know he's a busy guy. Plus, he'll probably stumble on this thread and give us an opinion anyway.

I know better than to leave my quilt or sleeping bag stuffed, but is it ok to store my hammock and tarp stuffed? I get the feeling that I probably shouldn't, but since space is at a premium for me I thought I'd check the consensus.

If it's not OK, how do you all store large items like tarps/hammocks?

No harm at all in leaving those stuffed. Down filled gear is the only thing you need to worry about.

For some background, I got this crazy idea after I remembered being told that I should store my tent in a "storage" bag rather than in a stuff sack. I figure the hammock is just a tent with tree straps, so I thought the same might apply.

you should never fold a tent the same way each time and put it in the storage sack. I stuff the tent in the sack so bascialy it has become a stuff sack. I was told the reason being was that over time you will make those folds the weak spots in a tent. The same should apply to a hammock aslo. I stuff it in the sack.

I've heard it both ways. At any rate, I was told that the tent should be stored in a larger sack... after leaving it in the stuff sack for a year or so, it did seem like the fly had gotten a little tacky. Now I store it in a large garbage bag, just kind of loosely stuffed in there.

What you should never do is store your gear wet!! Even a little bit of dampness is bad. What I do, and I have my scouts do is after a camping trip, all tents, tarps, my hammock basicly any "fabric" type of gear, will be opened up at home and either set up or draped over my clothesline. I've had my front yard looking like a camp ground before due to all the tents being set up. While they are set up, you can wash them, treat them with waterproofing stuff, check for any tears or holes, check your guy lines, general maintence. And then when they are totally dry, fold them and put them away for your next trip. I always put them into their original stuff sacks and haven't had any problems yet. Big tents, I fold the same way every time, but the folds are just a bit "off" so that there's not a "crease" that develops at that spot. Small tarps, tarp/tents, I stuff into it's stuff sack. But I sort of roll, stuff even that. My hammock is also sort of rolled then stuffed into it's sack. Big tarps are folded then rolled. but the folds always ends up in different places.

I have skins for both my hammock and tarp. I just stuff the skinned items in in a stuff sack for storage at home.

I leave all my tents, tarps, and hammocks loosely stuffed in mesh bags, and hang them - avoids mildew issues, creases, etc.

I put a tent away wet once. (A long time ago)
It is a backup tent now. It still smells bad...
