    Baffle Height

I probably should've asked this a long time ago but better late than never. When people talk about baffle height are they talking about the height of the baffle wall material or the loft? I know a general rule is about 2.5" of baffle height is usually good to around 20 degrees. So is that 2.5" of baffle material (minus seam allowance) or 2.5" of loft?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Yes. If you calculate the loft height to be 2.5 inches, you can make the baffle walls to be that height. This will not give you that puffy look that most people like to see in their quilts. For over stuffeded quilts, you will have a fuller quilt than the baffle wall. Really it's up to you on how you want to do it. Ive done it both ways.

Ok so what would I do if I wanted that puffy look? I'm making a TQ so really wasn't considering a differential cut. I've made a couple of TQ's in the past and I can usually get about 3" of loft using 2.5" baffle walls.

Sorry should've read your reply better. So you're saying that I just need to overstuff it to get a little more loft?

That's right. But there is a point where over stuff becomes a waste of down. I wouldn't go more than 20% or so. Can't remember the number. Sounds like you are already doing what most are doing.

20-30% overstuff over the fill power calculation is pretty standard.
For the puffy look generally make your baffle height 0.5" to 1" lower than desired loft. Use an uq calculator like CatSplats which lets you set loft and baffle height independantly.
